If your goal is a stronger, more consistent horse… don’t skip this step

Sometimes we try to do everything ourselves, we ride more, school harder, push through little ni**les and then wonder why progress feels slow or inconsistent.

It’s not because you’re doing anything wrong. It’s because even the best riders can’t see everything on their own and horses can’t tell us exactly what they need.

Getting the right support, whether that’s from a bodyworker, trainer, farrier or physiotherapist, can be a game changer.

When the right people are involved:
✨ Subtle changes gets noticed early
✨ Weaknesses are addressed before they become problems
✨ Your horse moves freer, stronger, and more confidently

The result?

A happier, more capable horse and a partnership that feels easier under saddle, because the right support is there.

Don’t wait until something becomes a big problem. Ask for help now and set your horse up to perform at their best.

It occurred to me the other day after treating a few horses that were presenting with mild to moderate discomfort around the Sacro iliac region that this is a common problem for horses and I wanted to share with you some of my thoughts.

I hope this is helpful and please do reach out if you have any questions

Most riders respond to challenges by trying to move faster, pushing for more sessions, riding more frequently and hoping that doing more will solve the problem… 😫

But that is often exactly what slows progress down and makes it harder to get the results you want.

If your horse’s body isn’t truly ready for the work you’re asking, no amount of repetition or extra lessons will make it easier for them to perform correctly, and you may end up reinforcing tension or compensations without even realising it.

Instead focus on making sure the foundations are solid first!

✅ Balance
✅ Strength
✅ Straightness
✅ Freedom through the body

…before asking for more demanding work.

When these foundations aren’t in place, every lesson reinforces compensations that will take longer to correct down the line, leaving both you and your horse frustrated.
Taking the time to address small ni**les, support weak areas, and ensure the body is prepared isn’t slowing you down, it’s setting you up to move forwards faster, with confidence, clarity, and long-term progress that actually lasts.

For support with your horse’s performance, DM me the word “PERFORMANCE”

Riders who have consistent, confident performances aren’t necessarily doing more…

They’re doing things differently.

They think ahead of their competitions, and ask themselves if their horse’s body is actually prepared for it.

They notice the small changes early and address them before they become bigger issues.

They take on the right advice and support, rather than trying to figure everything out alone.

And they understand that rest and recovery are just as important as training when it comes to building strength and maintaining soundness.

It’s not about doing more.

It’s about being proactive in supporting your horse.

If your horse feels ‘a bit off’… this post was written for you

Not lame, not obviously in pain and nothing you can clearly point to… but just a quiet ni**le that something doesn’t feel quite the same as it used to.

It might be that their stride feels slightly shorter or that one rein feels heavier than the other, or perhaps your transitions don’t feel as smooth.

And because it’s subtle, it can be very easy to question yourself. You might find yourself wondering whether you’re overthinking it, whether it’s something you’re doing differently, or whether you just need to ride more, train more or push through it in the hope that things will come right again.

So often, that’s exactly what riders do.

They keep going, they try a little harder, they adjust their riding, and they hope that with enough consistency, things will improve.

But more often than not, that quiet feeling you’re picking up on isn’t something to ignore, and you know your horse better than anyone.

In my experience, these small, early changes are very often the first indication that your horse is starting to compensate somewhere in their body. It may not be enough to cause something obvious or dramatic, but it is enough to influence how they move, how they feel, and how they respond to what you’re asking under saddle.

You’re not being overly sensitive for noticing it and you’re not imagining it. You are simply picking up on the very first signs that your horse needs a little more support from you.

This is exactly the type of challenges I work with owners to resolve, helping them to understand what they’re feeling, to look at how their horse is moving, and to put a plan in place that supports the body before those small compensations become bigger problems.

If this resonates with you, DM me the word “CHANGES”. There’s no pressure, just a conversation to help you gain a bit more clarity around what might be going on.

Sometimes it’s these small, early observations that make the biggest difference in the long run.

There isn’t one answer to having a comfortable supple horse!

Having a horse that can move freely and comfortably, without pain or injury isn’t something that happens overnight.

It’s what happens when lots of little pieces all fall into place.

The right nutrition.

The right training programme.

The right support team.

There isn’t a magic answer, but consistency does pay off!

Double tap if you agree 💜

I’m often asked how I keep my own horses feeling strong and comfortable in their work.

And the honest answer?

There’s no magic routine.

Soundness isn’t something I think about only when there’s a problem, it’s something I consider every single week. I pay attention to small changes in movement. I train for balance before I train for performance. I build strength gradually instead of rushing progress. I allow proper recovery instead of pushing through. And I address tension early, not when it becomes obvious.

Because here’s what I know from working with so many horses:
Most “sudden” issues aren’t sudden at all.

They’re the result of small compensations that weren’t addressed early enough.

Supporting your horse’s soundness isn’t about doing more, it’s about being intentional. And when you approach training and management this way, everything feels different.

If you’ve got long-term goals for your horse, this is your reminder: protect their body first and the performance will follow.

Hi I’m Annabelle, I help owners and riders who feel stuck and who are struggling to move forwards despite doing all of the ‘things’.

I’m not here for a quick fix, I work with owners and riders who want to commit to helping their horses move and feel better, and who understand the value of team work.

Like you I’m an owner and rider, I understand how heartbreaking it can be to put in so much of your time and energy, but still struggle to see an improvement when you’re in the saddle.

And I also know how challenging it can be to add another thing to your to-do list! But that’s why I work with you and your horse, every plan is different because every partnership is different.
