TYPES OF EYE SPECIALISTS

There are 3 primary types of eye care professionals:

1. Ophthalmologist

Role:
An ophthalmologist is a medical doctor who has
completed extensive education and is licensed
to provide total eye care.

Specialisation:
An ophthalmologist diagnoses and treats all eye
diseases, performs eye surgery and prescribes
eyeglasses and contact lenses.

When to see one?
See an Ophthalmologist for serious eye conditions,
injuries, diseases requiring medical or surgical
treatment or if you have underlying health conditions
that can affect the eyes.

Growing up and being schooled in Alberton, I had the privilege of returning there in 1994 to establish my practice as an ophthalmologist. From the outset, I was fortunate to work alongside some of the finest colleagues one could hope for in this country.

It was a great privilege to be part of a surgical institution, Optimed that offers ophthalmic care comparable to the very best anywhere in the world. I never experienced the frustration of working in an environment that deteriorated over time — instead, I was fortunate to help create an ideal space in which to practise my profession.

Over the years, I consistently tried to honour a simple principle: patients first, always — while building strong, respectful relationships with colleagues and staff.

This year also marked 50 years since I matriculated, a milestone that brings clarity. Time moves on, and at some point one must recognise when it is right to step aside. Unlike sport, where careers end abruptly, medicine tends to drift on — but it cannot last forever.

Circumstances aligned, and the decision to retire became both practical and peaceful, knowing my patients are left in very capable hands and that my personnel are well cared for.

I now look forward to a new chapter — most importantly, spending time with Naomi at Kareespruit in Zeerust, and embracing the quieter rewards that life now offers.

VISION PROBLEMS

PRESBYOPIA

• Presbyopia is the gradual loss of the eye’s ability to focus on
close-up objects

• It happens because the eye’s natural lens becomes less
flexible

• Presbyopia typically becomes noticeable in your 40s

• Symptoms include blurry near vision, eye strain or fatigue
from close up work and headaches

• Treatment includes either glasses, bifocals, contact lenses,
refractive surgery and lens implants.

VISION PROBLEMS

ASTIGMATISM
In astigmatism, light isn't evenly distributed onto your retina
Images can appear blurry or stretched, however, not everyone
with astigmatism has distorted vision.
Astigmatism is often present and is frequently hereditary.
In some cases it can be triggered by trauma to the eye.
It can also occur alongside nearsightedness and farsightedness.
Most cases are treatable with glasses or contact lenses and
for some corrective surgery is an option.

VISION PROBLEMS

FARSIGHTEDNESS

• Farsightedness is also called hyperopia, you can see distant objects
clearly, but close objects get blurry.
It happens when the eye doesn’t bend light properly causing it to
focus behind the retina instead of on it.

• This can be caused by a shorter-than-normal eyeball or a less curved
cornea. Exact reasons are still being researched.

• Corrective lenses are the most common treatment and surgical options
may be available for adults.
