EYE CONDITIONS LINKED WITH HEART DISEASE

Diabetic Retinopathy

• Diabetic retinopathy is a complication of diabetes, specifically
affecting the retina.
• The exact cause of diabetes isn't fully understood, however,
excess weight, physical inactivity, and family history significantly
increase the risk
• High blood sugar levels, common in diabetes, can damage the
tiny blood vessels in the retina.
• Restricted blood flow, bleeding in the eye and the development
of leaky blood vessels can result in damage to the retina.
• These changes can lead to blurry vision, dark or floating spots,
and even blindness if not treated.
• Regular eye exams, keeping blood sugar and blood pressure
under control. Early treatment can help prevent or slow down
the progression of diabetic retinopathy

EYE CONDITIONS LINKED WITH HEART DISEASE

Hypertensive Chorioretinopathy / Choroidopathy

• Hypertensive chorioretinopathy, also known as hypertensive
choroidopathy when the focus is on the choroid, is a condition
where high blood pressure damages the blood vessels in the
retina and choroid (the vascular layer under the retina)
• In hypertensive chorioretinopathy, the elevated blood pressure
can cause the blood vessels in the eye to narrow, leak or even
rupture, leading to various visual symptoms.
• Symptoms can include blurred vision, distorted vision, visual
field defects, and in severe cases, vision loss.
• Hypertensive chorioretinopathy is a serious condition that can
be a sign of end-organ damage from hypertension, potentially
indicating damage to other vital organs like the kidneys and heart.
• The primary treatment for hypertensive chorioretinopathy
involves controlling blood pressure through medication and
lifestyle modifications.

EYE CONDITIONS LINKED WITH HEART DISEASE

Hypertensive Retinopathy

• Hypertensive retinopathy is a condition where high blood pressure
damages the blood vessels in the retina, the light-sensitive tissue
at the back of the eye
• This damage can affect vision and overall eye health.
• It's a complication that can arise from long-term, uncontrolled
high blood pressure, leading to arteriosclerosis.
• In the retina, it can result in retinopathy (damaged retina) and
cause bleeding in the eye, blurred vision and vision loss.
• If diabetes is also present, the risk of hypertensive retinopathy
is even higher.
• Treatments including controlling blood pressure for managing
hypertensive retinopathy; medications to lower blood pressure
are often prescribed; in case of vision loss, further treatment
may be necessary to address specific retinal damage.
• If left untreated hypertensive retinopathy can lead to severe
vision loss or blindness.
• Early diagnosis and treatment of high blood pressure are
essential for preventing or minimizing the risk of vision loss.

EYE CONDITIONS LINKED WITH HEART DISEASE

Hypertensive Optic Neuropathy

• Hypertensive optic neuropathy, a component of hypertensive
retinopathy, is a condition where high blood pressure (hypertension)
damages the optic nerve in the eye.
• This damage can manifest as swelling of the optic disc (the point
where the optic nerve enters the retina).
• Symptoms include blurred vision, reduced or fluctuating vision,
blind spots, and even sudden vision loss.
• Headaches and double vision may also occur, eye floaters and
abnormal eye movement.
• Hypertensive optic neuropathy can develop gradually, with subtle
changes in vision initially, or it can occur suddenly, particularly in
cases of poorly controlled hypertension.
• Early detection and management of high blood pressure are
crucial to prevent or minimize vision loss from hypertensive
optic neuropathy.

EYE CONDITIONS LINKED WITH HEART DISEASE

Retinal Vein Occlusions (RVO)
• RVO is a condition where one of the veins in the retina, the light-
sensitive tissue at the back of the eye, becomes blocked.
• High blood pressure can cause central or branch retinal vein
occlusions and are a type of eye stroke.
• Central Retinal Vein Occlusions (CRVO) occurs when the main
retinal vein is blocked;
• Branch Retinal Vein Occlusion (BRVO) occurs when a smaller
branch of the retinal vein is blocked.
• Symptoms include gradual vision loss and blurry vision in
part or all of one eye, new floaters (dark spots, lines or
squiggles) in the field of vision.
• If untreated RVO is serious and can lead to vision loss
• Early diagnosis and treatment are crucial for
preserving vision.
• People with RVO are at a higher risk of developing
glaucoma or macula edema .
• RVO is often associated with other health conditions
such as atherosclerosis and high blood pressure.

EYE CONDITIONS LINKED WITH HEART DISEASE

Retinal Artery Occlusions

• Retinal Artery Occlusions (RAO) occurs when a blood vessel in the
retina is blocked, leading to reduced blood flow and oxygen
delivery to the retina.
• Atherosclerotic plaque (the accumulation of cholesterol along the
interior of the artery) can narrow arteries and reduce blood flow.
In the eyes, a clot or a chunk of the cholesterol-filled plaque can
break off, leading to artery blockage. This is also called an
“eye stroke” and can result in sudden, painless vision loss.
• Type and extent of vision loss depends on the location of the
blockage and whether it is a central or branch retinal artery occlusion.
• The most common types of blockages are due to cholesterol and
calcium (from the carotid arteries that send blood from the heart
to the brain) and blood clots from the valves of the heart.
• Symptoms include blurry vision or vision loss, floaters, pain or
pressure in your eye.
• Some people recover fully from retinal artery occlusion, but most
people have some degree of vision loss.

EYE CONDITIONS LINKED WITH HEART DISEASE

Occipital Lobe Stroke

• The occipital lobe in the rear part of the brain processes vision.
• A stroke in this region of the brain is less common than in other
parts of the brain.
• When it does occur, it can lead to a variety of visual impairments.
• Symptoms include a loss of a visual field, double vision, or difficulty
recognising faces, objects and colour.
• They may entail nonvisual symptoms such as a headache and a
change in consciousness.
• The long-term outlook for occipital stroke patients varies depending
on the severity of the stroke, the individual's overall health, and the
effectiveness of rehabilitation.
• Some individuals may experience a complete recovery of vision,
while others may have permanent visual impairments
