Repost:

One of the best pieces of advice I ever received came from a teaching colleague while I was telling her about Grace—the Persistent Question Asker of my classroom who tested my patience daily.

“Just remember, every person in that room is somebody’s child,” the veteran teacher said with a mix of understanding and authority.

The next day when Grace arrived, I met her cheerful gaze a little longer and gave her a wide smile. Like the lyrics to an old 50’s song, I kept hearing, 'She’s somebody’s baby … somebody’s baby'. For the first time, I saw Grace as someone’s most beloved gift who, for whatever reason, needed extra assurances. Extra hugs. Extra smiles.

And that slight but significant change in my perspective made a huge difference that resulted in:

a little more patience,
a little more kindness,
a little more compassion,
a little more acceptance
For Grace.

When I became a mom, my experience with Grace helped me be a better parent; I am certain of that. Now that my kids are in their late teens and early twenties, and quite busy with their own lives, I find Grace is still helping – this time it is ME. Grace is helping ME be more patient and kinder to MYSELF.

When I hold myself to standards I would never put on someone else, I think of Grace. I look down at my hands that have taught, guided, created, nurtured, and loved for over half a century, and I say:

“She is somebody's child – a miracle, a gift – let me treat her as such.”

Let me be patient, she is still learning and growing.

Let me give her plenty of rest and time to play.

Let me speak to her with kindness.

Let me remember the power of Grace.

Let me love myself for who I am.
