More from Gene Smiith about their Irlen journey. If you struggle with similar symptoms or your child struggles please make an appointment to be screened for Irlen.

On day 5 of homeschooling Michael, I realized something is wrong. I frantically Googled symptoms: dyslexia? dysgraphia? I messaged my primary school friend who turned out to be an educational psychologist. Am I on the right path, I ask her. Her reply: Irlen syndrome.

Before 21/1/2026, I have never heard of it. Irlen syndrome, also known as Irlens, or visual stress.

What I've learned about it:
Way too many kids get diagnosed with ADHD, dyslexia or dysgraphia, when it is actually Irlens.
Symptoms could include headaches, light sensitivity, migraines, dizziness, nausea, constipation, diarrhea.
It could cause: anxiety, stress, burnout.
Coping mechanisms could include: jaw clenching, inability to sit still.
What it is: a neurodivergent disorder, the way your brain processes visual information.
How it is caused: severe head injuries or hereditary.

What it looks like for our 8-year old: constantly jumping, twirling, running around, severely struggling to write, which may seem like laziness.

It turns out Michael didn't need more attention or encouragement or exercise to write. It turns out that e-v-e-r-y-t-h-i-n-g he looks at, is jumping around. Let that sink in. Everything. The lines on the page, on which he is supposed to write. The words which he is supposed to read. The numbers which he is supposed to calculate. Mommy's face which he is supposed to look at and listen to. The floor which he is supposed to walk on. The ground which he needs to ride his bike on. The shoe laces which he need to tie.

It turns out that Michael got it from me. What I thought was just bad eye sight and severe light sensitivity on my part, turns out to be Irlen syndrome. And suddenly everything from my childhood makes sense: the letters jumping around in the grade 1 book, being afraid of the dark (because even the darkness move around, which could be quite daunting), the struggle to focus and stay focused, to form words or speak clearly.

The solution: coloured lenses, worn as glasses, which correct the way your brain interprets what you see. The correct colour calms your brain, resulting in clear thinking.

Welcome to our new journey! And stick around to find out more

I would like to share a journey with you on how Irlen lenses made a difference in the life of a young boy and his mom. Thank you Géne Smith for allowing us to share your journey.

"What is Irlen Syndrome?
Irlen Syndrome, also known as Scotopic Sensitivity Syndrome or Visual Stress, is a condition where the brain struggles to process light and visual stimuli efficiently. It is not a vision problem but rather a neurological one, affecting how visual information is interpreted. Individuals with this syndrome may experience discomfort when reading, writing, or viewing certain patterns, often due to sensitivity to specific wavelengths of light.

Symptoms
The symptoms of Irlen Syndrome can vary widely among individuals and may include:
Light Sensitivity: Discomfort or pain in bright lights or fluorescent lighting.
Reading Difficulties: Challenges with reading, including slow reading speed, low comprehension, and visual fatigue.
Visual Distortions: Words may appear to move, blur, or crowd together on the page.
Headaches and Migraines: Increased frequency of headaches, particularly after visual tasks.
Concentration Issues: Difficulty maintaining focus during reading or other visually intensive activities.

Causes and Risk Factors
Irlen Syndrome is believed to have a genetic component, often running in families. It can also be acquired due to medical conditions, traumatic brain injuries, or other neurological issues. The exact cause is not fully understood, but it involves a dysfunction in how the brain processes visual information.

Diagnosis and Treatment
Diagnosis of Irlen Syndrome typically involves a thorough assessment by a trained Irlen Diagnostician, who evaluates the individual's symptoms and visual processing abilities. Treatment often includes the use of Irlen Spectral Filters, which are colored overlays or lenses designed to reduce light sensitivity and improve visual processing. These filters can be worn as glasses or contact lenses.

Conclusion
Irlen Syndrome can significantly impact an individual's academic performance and daily functioning. While it is not a widely recognized condition in standard medical practice, many individuals report improvements in their symptoms with appropriate interventions. If you suspect you or someone you know may have Irlen Syndrome, seeking a professional evaluation can be beneficial for managing the condition effectively."

🌿 A Back-to-School Prayer for Our Children 🌿

Heavenly Father,
Tonight we place our children gently into Your hands.
As they step into classrooms tomorrow, step ahead of them, Lord.
Where their feet walk, let Your peace walk first.

You know every child by name, the confident and the quiet, the eager and the anxious, the ones who love learning and the ones who fear it.
Nothing about them is hidden from You.

Father, guard their hearts and minds.
Protect them from harm, from bullying, from loneliness, and from words that would make them feel small or unseen.
Let them know that their worth is not measured by marks, popularity, or comparison, but by the truth that they are deeply loved by You.

Grant them courage when they feel overwhelmed, focus when distractions arise,
wisdom when they are taught, and strength when the days feel long.

Place kindness in their mouths and compassion in their actions.
Help them to choose what is right, even when it is difficult, and to be a light in places that feel dark or unkind.

Bless their teachers, Lord.
Give them patience, understanding, and renewed purpose.
May classrooms become spaces of safety, growth, and encouragement.

For the child who is nervous tonight, calm their heart.
For the child who is excited, guide their steps.
For the child who feels forgotten, remind them that You see them fully.

Cover every school, every classroom, every playground, and every journey there and back.
Surround our children with Your angels,
and let Your presence be their constant companion.

We trust You with this new beginning, Lord.
Go before them, walk beside them, and remain within them, today, tomorrow, and all year long.

In Jesus’ name, Amen and Amen

The new school year has started. Perhaps as parents we need to change our focus on helping our children to be good human beings instead of chasing academic prizes and sport accolades. We might just change our world for the better.

I saw this quote and it rings true.. we all have some core needs that have not been met when we were younger and these affect us still today. You might not get those core needs met by the people that should have given it but it is now up to you to meet them for yourself.
