📱👓 Protecting our children’s vision, together!
Did you know that excessive screen time is linked to an increased risk of myopia (short-sightedness) in children? With more learning and play happening on devices, our children's eyes are working harder than ever before.
The 20-20-20 Rule for Healthy Eyes:
Every 20 minutes, take a 20-second break and look at something 20 metres away. This simple habit helps reduce eye strain and may slow myopia progression.
Additional tips for parents:
• Encourage at least 2 hours of outdoor time daily
• Reduce near screen time to a maximum of 20 minutes*
• Position screens/books at arm's length from the eyes
• Ensure good lighting when using devices
• Ensure at least 9 hours of uninterrupted sleep per night
• Schedule annual eye exams
*Screen time guideline for kids under 12:
• Under 18 months old: no screen time (except for short video calls)
• 18 months - 6 years old: under 1 hour screen time daily outside school
• Under 6 years old: don't leave screens on in the background
• 7 - 12 years old: under 2 hours screen time daily except for schoolwork
Protecting our children's vision starts with small, consistent efforts. Let's work together as parents, caregivers, and schools to keep our children’s eyes healthy!
