Maryke Oberholzer - Registered Dietitian I am a registered dietitian with the Health Professionals Council of South Africa (HPCSA). I am a registered dietitian. I qualified in 2008 with a B.

Dietetics degree from the University of Pretoria. My approach to dietetics is to communicate the science of nutrition in a practical and “user friendly” manner to guide and inspire people to incorporate healthier food choices into their daily lives. I have a special interest in weight loss, diabetes mellitus and irritable bowel syndrome. Other interests include cardiovascular diseases, sports nutrition, maternal nutrition and infant/child feeding. I am registered with the Health Professionals council of South Africa (HPCSA) which means that my services are covered by medical aid.

Here are five simple tips to get you started:

1. Choose Foods Close to Nature
"Real" foods are typically recognizable as plants or animals, not products made in a factory. Focus on foods like fruits, vegetables, eggs, beans, lean meats, whole grains, nuts, and seeds.

2. Keep Ingredient Lists Simple.
When buying packaged foods, look for shorter ingredient lists with minimal added sugars and artificial additives!

3. Build Meals with Whole Ingredients.
Instead of focusing on what to avoid, focus on what to include. Aim for balanced meals that include a protein, colourful vegetables, healthy fats
and a whole grain or starchy vegetable. "Real" food meals keep full and satisfied longer.

Honey Garlic Salmon (or Chicken) with Roasted Vegetables (Serves 2)

Ingredients
Salmon
• 2 salmon or chicken fillets (120 to 150 g each)
• 15 ml olive oil
• 15 ml honey
• 2 cloves garlic, minced
• 15 ml low sodium soy sauce or tamari
• 15 ml lemon juice
• 5 ml Dijon mustard (optional)
• Salt and black pepper
Roasted vegetables
• 1 small zucchini (about 150 g), sliced
• 1 red bell pepper (about 150 g), chopped
• 150 g cherry tomatoes
• 15 ml olive oil
• 5 ml Italian seasoning
• Salt and black pepper

Method
1. Preheat oven to 200°C.
2. Toss vegetables with olive oil, seasoning, salt, and pepper. Roast for 15 to 20 minutes.
3. Mix honey, garlic, soy sauce, lemon juice, and Dijon.
4. Place salmon on a lined tray, brush with glaze, and bake for 10 to 12 minutes until flaky.
5. Serve salmon with roasted vegetables.
