I understand that it can become confusing as to who to see and why, so here are the descriptive roles and main differences between a Physiotherapist, Biokineticist and Chiropractor.

The Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) explains that “a Physiotherapist assesses, treats and manages a wide variety of injuries including ailments from the fields of orthopaedics, neurology, respiratory and thoracic, cardio-vascular, obstetrics, sports medicine, paediatrics, geriatrics, intensive care units and general rehabilitation. Other medical fields and community care also falls within the scope of physiotherapy. “

The HPCSA explains that “a Biokineticist treats people with a variety of sport and orthopaedic injuries through the modality of exercise therapy which is based on scientific evidence and personalised exercise prescription. They use exercise rehabilitation for people with chronic disease, sport injuries and diseases of lifestyle. Health promotion and the maintenance of physical abilities as well as specialised physical activity programme prescriptions are within the scope of Biokinetic practice.”

The Chiropractic Association of South Africa describes Chiropractic as “a health profession specialising in the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of mechanical disorders of the musculoskeletal system and the effects of these disorders on the functioning of the nervous system and general health.”

All professions have an important role to play and it is not uncommon for the professions to refer to one another and work together as a team in providing the best possible treatment for their clients.

A physiotherapist is skilled in assessing, diagnosing and treating their clients from the acute phase to end stage management and is also involved in maintenance treatment. The Physio might choose to refer their client to the biokinetcist for end stage physical rehab if they are not well practiced in this stage of care. The “Physio” might also encourage consultations with the Chiropractor if they feel it will facilitate their clients journey to optimal movement function.

✴️Electrical Nerve Stimulation✴️

✔️Reduce inflammation
✔️Encourage fresh blood circulation
✔️Reduce pain
✔️Assist contraction of weak muscles

The device provides low voltage electrical currents through electrodes which are applied over an area of pain, inflammation or weakness.

It is a painless and usually comforting treatment tool.

It is used for symptomatic treatment and provides short term relief. Reducing symptoms better allows you to engage in movement rehab, which provides the long term relief of symptoms.

What you can expect from your first physiotherapy session…

We will begin with a chat about
-what you’re experiencing
-what aggravates and relieves your symptoms
-any past history of your symptom or any other injuries or surgeries
-what movements you’re having difficulty with
-what you hope to achieve with physiotherapy intervention

We can then move on to movement tests to identify which body structure/s are complaining.

From there, we can begin to calm your symptoms and work through the underlying factors that brought the symptoms on in the first place.

Usually, physiotherapy sessions are not just once off; it would have taken time to develop complaints, thus, it would take time to rectify them.

After the first session, I will be able to advise you on the recommended treatment plan and the number of treatment sessions that might be necessary.

Ms Y has a chronic lung condition that leaves her feeling short of breath with little movement. She had also been struggling with a sore shoulder which limited her ability to pull her oxygen concentrator around her home.

We have been seeing Ms Y for physiotherapy at her home for the past month, and she is happy to say that she is now able to comfortably grasp a knife and make herself a sandwich without becoming short of breath. She is also able to pull her oxygen concentrator around with more ease.

Well done for all your hard work and we are so happy that it’s paying off!

Often times, when working with elderly or less mobile patients in acute and sub-acute hospitals, my clients are nervous at the thought of me lifting them up and helping them stand or walk.

They are then surprised at how easily we achieve it and how safe they feel. I’m not surprised! I’ve been putting in the work for it.

I want longevity in my profession and it’s one of the reasons I train- especially strength training…

What areas of your life could benefit from exercise? Joining your friends on a hike? Keeping up with your kids or grandkids? Reducing risk of injury and fatigue with heavy duty labour work? Reducing injury and fatigue with sedentary/ desk work?

This is a scaled (easier) variation of the bar muscle up, a gymnastic movement, that is also performed in the sport of CrossFit.

Thought you could come for a session, get a “massage” and you will be fixed?

Well that’s simply just not how it works…

The truth is, it’s likely you’ve developed your compliant over time, and that, it will take time/ a few sessions to improve or resolve.

The truth is, your physiotherapist can’t “fix” you; only you can do that.

When you come to see your physio, you are paying them for studying, being able to apply their knowledge to you, and then teach you how to take control and manage what you are experiencing.

Yes, we do have some really useful skills and, what I like to call, “healing hands “, but, for long term gain, you have to make the necessary changes and put in the work.

Is this all sounding too much? Would you rather go to the Dr and take a pill? Well, same thing applies there. That pill will do the short term work (probably less effectively than our techniques) and likely dish out side effects too.

(Now I’m not saying that pharmacological medication does not have its place; what I am saying is that physical or movement medication has its place too.)

Please feel free to make contact with me if you don’t quite understand how physiotherapy can help you or when to make use of physiotherapy intervention- I will be happy to chat you you about it 😊

✅DRY NEEDLING

Dry needling is one of the treatment techniques we use for tight/knotty points in muscle which cause referring pain.

It involves placing thin needles into the muscle to bring about fresh blood flow and endorphin release. This stimulates a healing process and relieves pain.

It is an effective treatment and even more so when coupled with stretching and exercise.

If you think this type of treatment could benefit you, feel free to make contact and ask any questions you may have

Yes! We do use some great hands on techniques to help reduce pain (which is important because pain can affect how well you’re able to engage in exercise) but, it is the movement component of physical rehabilitation that really brings on the long term pain relief.
