Let’s talk the most often brought up topic this winter.

Dry and/or Dehydrated Skin

First thing to clear up - they are not the same thing.

As the winter really gripped South Africa we really saw a surge in posts about “dry” skin and for good reason!

But knowing the difference between dry skin and dehydrated skin can help you treat your skin more effectively.

Dry Skin = Skin Type
Dry skin is a lack of oil (sebum). It's a skin type you're born with or develop over time. It often comes with:
⚪️Flakiness
🔴Rough texture
🔵Itchiness
🟢Fine lines appearing more pronounced

Dehydrated Skin = Skin Condition
Dehydrated skin is a lack of water. ANY skin type (even oily!) can become dehydrated. Signs include:
⚪️Dullness
🔴Tight or uncomfortable feeling
🔵More noticeable fine lines
🟢Possible increase in oil production (your skin trying to compensate!)

Why does it feel like winter makes it worse, well because it does. Winter air is colder and drier, which drags moisture out of your skin faster. Add in the possibility of indoor heating like aircons, heaters or simply not opening the windows etc and you’ve got the perfect recipe for both dryness and dehydration.

PLUS: Many of us tend to drink less water in the winter, simply because we don't feel as thirsty. This can silently contribute to dehydrated skin, even if you're layering on moisturisers like there is no tomorrow.

Tips:
💦Use a hydrating serum with humectants - honestly the most basic one of all - glycerine is fabulous. It’s also a base or a key ingredient in a lot of hydrating serums.
💧Follow up with a moisturiser that seals it in.
🐬Increase your water intake, even if you're not sweating.
🧖🏻‍♀️Use a humidifier indoors to combat dry air.

Understanding what your skin is really asking for is key to giving it the love it needs.

Microneedles containing cross-linked hyaluronic acid (X-linked HA) particulates were prepared to control the degradation and swelling behaviour after transdermal drug delivery. The X-linked HA particulates were prepared by cross-linking HA chains and then passing the particulates through a sieve. Then, microneedles were prepared by micromolding method. The rheological properties of X-linked HA were studied. The pe*******on success rate, mechanical failure and dissolution rate of microneedles containing only hyaluronic acid (HA MN) and microneedles containing X-linked HA were compared. The delivery of fluorescein into the skin with X-linked HA MN was also observed using a confocal microscope. The size of the pulverised particulates in water ranged between 29 and 82 μm in diameter. The HA MN and X-linked HA MN were 270 μm in length. X-linked HA MN with fluorescein was inserted to a depth of 90% of the microneedle length successfully. There was no decrease in the pe*******on success rate for MN with up to 20% content of X-linked HA particulates
