In light of Covid-19, many infected patients are being placed on ventilators to assist with respiratory control, however prolonged ventilation can damage vocal chords, along with other issues. The affects of prolonged ventilation can lead to number of difficulties with breathing, swallowing and speech.

A simple way to decrease the risk of aspiration pneumonia (material such as saliva, food or liquid, entering the lungs resulting in pneumonia) is to have adequate oral hygiene! This means that if the patient does aspirate on materials, it is less likely to cause infection.

We thought we'd let you know the precautionary measures we're taking, in light of recent events.

1. We have increased efforts to keep the therapy environment sterilized. This includes sanitising mats and equipment after each session as well as increased hand washing before and after each kiddie is seen.

2. We are conducting a brief screening patients prior to sessions to rule out any Flu-like symptoms. We also encourage parents to inform us telephonically, prior to sessions, whether they or their child have had these symptoms.

3. We are encouraging parents to withhold from therapy if they have been in contact with any individual who has been traveling or who has had symptoms. This is done in order to protect our other kiddies, parents and professionals at both practices. We encouraging parents to keep to their appointment times, and not to arrive early, to avoid sitting and waiting with other parents.

As a practice we are praying for protection over each one of the kiddies and families that come to therapy. May this be a time where fear does not overwhelm but rather the Peace.

What is a SOCIAL STORY?
This is information that is put into a story in order to help improve understanding of the social world and unspoken rules of social engagement.

They have visuals and words that help people understand what will occur in novel situations, learn how to act in safe and appropriate ways in public and how to understand emotions of self and others.

In light of recent events, we've attached a social story that may just help your kiddies understand what's going on, what we can do and what to expect.
In the mean time, we'll be praying for peace and protection over our beautiful community.

This is a great resource for parents, caregivers and educators. Note: Please let us know if you know who created it. We would like to give them credit.

IT'S CEREBRAL PALSY AWARENESS MONTH!

Cerebral Palsy (CP) is a neurological disorder that can affect posture and muscle tone, often resulting in difficulties with swallowing, speech and communication.

We love all our kiddies with CP and we're excited to raise awareness of this condition but also to celebrate the joy and love they bring to those that know them!

This year the awareness color is green to celebrate growth, renewal of life and vibrancy!

Dysphagia [dis-fay-jah] (PART 1)
(noun) a medical term related to difficulty feeding, eating, drinking and swallowing.

A child may experience dysphagia as a result of brain injury (cerebral palsy, oral apraxia, stroke, head injury etc), developmental delay or disorder (autism spectrum disorder, feeding delay, down syndrome, etc) or even due to structural difficulties (cleft lip/palate, craniofacial malformation, etc). Some children may be "fussy eaters" or have oral aversions, only tolerating certain textures and tastes- this is also seen as dysphagia!

It's important to manage childhood dysphagia to ensure your child is getting adequate nutrition for brain development and growth.

We've attached an article on Childhood Dysphagia for your interest.
