Today is Nut Day!
The term ‘nut allergy’ can be confusing, because we tend to use it to describe an allergic reaction to the fruit of unrelated plants such as peanuts, seeds and nuts that grow on trees. Peanuts are related to chickpeas and peas, whereas tree nuts include almonds, cashews, macadamia nuts and walnuts. Seeds include sesame seeds, sunflower seeds and coconuts.
Peanut allergy is one of the most common allergies in children and although the allergy will improve with time for some, for others it will become worse. People who are allergic to peanuts will not necessarily be allergic to tree nuts or seeds.
Symptoms of peanut, tree nut or seed allergies vary and range from milder reactions to a severe allergic reaction (anaphylaxis). The most common symptom of a nut allergy is raised red bumps of skin (hives) and other allergic symptoms such as runny nose, cramps, nausea or vomiting. The best way to manage peanut, tree nut and seed allergies is to avoid all products containing these foods.

*Netcare relaxes COVID-19 protocols for antenatal visits and births*

We are pleased to inform parents-to-be that birthing partners are now allowed to accompany expectant mothers to antenatal visits at Netcare hospitals.
- Birthing partners may, as was the case up to now, also attend the delivery.
- Where the hospital’s infrastructure permits, rooming-in will once again be allowed for birthing partners.
- Where infrastructure does not make rooming-in possible, the birthing partner may visit the new mother twice daily as per our hospital’s visitation policy.
Note that these policy relaxations are on the provisos that partners complete the digital screening for COVID-19 which includes a comprehensive risk assessment questionnaire whereby identified risks such as COVID-19 exposure or symptoms may disallow entry. Partners will also be required to agree to adhere to strict infection prevention measures that have been put in place in our hospital. The provisos are put in place solely with the purpose to ensure the safety of our patients and healthcare workers.
