If your partner keeps saying “what?”… watch this.

In many relationships, one person notices the changes first.

You might notice your partner asking “what?” more often.
Struggling in noisy places.
Or going quiet after conversations.

Bringing it up can feel uncomfortable.
You don’t want to upset them.
You don’t want to sound critical.
And you don’t want to be told you’re overreacting.

Noticing changes in someone you care about doesn’t mean you’re imagining things.
It usually means you’re paying attention to them and to your relationship.

If this feels familiar, you’re not alone.
Sometimes, early awareness can make conversations feel easier, before frustration or distance builds.

💬 Save this, or share it with your partner if it feels right.

If listening leaves you feeling exhausted, it’s not just in your head. 🧠🔋

When your brain has to work overtime to piece together conversations, it leads to listening fatigue. It’s not disinterest or "zoning out"—it’s physical exhaustion from trying to keep up.

Listening fatigue often looks like:

➡️ Getting quieter as the night goes on.
➡️ Pulling back from group conversations.
➡️ Irritability or "shorter" responses.
➡️ Feeling mentally drained after a simple lunch date.

When you miss certain sounds, your brain has to "fill in the blanks." That constant mental gymnastics is draining.

If conversations are leaving you frustrated, you don’t have to just "power through" it.

📲 Book an appointment with us today. Let’s get you back to connecting without the exhaustion.

“𝑻𝒉𝒆𝒚’𝒓𝒆 𝒊𝒈𝒏𝒐𝒓𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒎𝒆.”

That’s how it can feel when someone goes quiet or checks out during a conversation.

But what if what you’re seeing is not disinterest?

When hearing becomes harder, especially in busy or noisy environments, listening can take a lot more effort. People may miss parts of conversations, feel overwhelmed, or withdraw without meaning to.

It’s not rejection. It’s often overwhelm.

Understanding this can change how we respond to each other.

💬 Have you noticed this in your own conversations?
You’re welcome to share your thoughts in the comments.

“You’re not listening to me.”
Or, “Why don’t you ever listen?”

Most people have said this at some point, to a partner, a child, a parent, or a friend.

What we do not always stop to consider is this:
Sometimes the problem is not listening.
Sometimes, it is hearing.

There are sounds people struggle to hear, especially in busy places.
Voices can get lost under background noise like the TV, a restaurant, kids talking, or phones going off.

From the outside, it can look like someone is ignoring you, switching off, or not caring.
But inside, they may be trying their best to follow the conversation.

Over time, this can create frustration, repetition, and miscommunication.

This month, we are talking about how hearing health plays a role in relationships and everyday life, and why noticing these moments early can make a difference.

If this feels familiar, you are not alone. Follow along as we unpack what may be going on and how to approach it with more understanding.

Comorbidity is a big word that can sound intimidating.

Simply put, it means other health factors that can influence your hearing over time.

Your hearing does not work on its own.
It relies on your brain, your circulation, your energy levels, and how your body copes with stress.

That is why hearing changes often do not start with silence.
They start with effort.

This year, we are unpacking the health connections that affect hearing, one month at a time, in a way that feels clear, supportive, and easy to understand.

Because hearing health is whole-body hearing health.

Follow along this year as we explore how hearing connects to your overall health and everyday life.

February is a month that naturally makes us think about connection.

Our relationships, our families, our friendships, and how close we feel to the people around us.

We often talk about communication in relationships, but we do not always talk about how hearing plays a role in that connection.

Many people notice that conversations feel more tiring than they used to.
They may switch off more quickly, avoid noisy situations, or feel misunderstood during everyday interactions.

Over time, this can change how people show up in conversations and in relationships.

At Hoffman Audiology, we take a whole-body hearing health approach because hearing is not just about your ears.
It is about how your brain processes sound and how your body supports listening.

This month, we are focusing on how hearing health affects communication, connection, and relationships.
We will be unpacking the subtle signs people often miss and why early awareness matters for quality of life and connection.

If communication has started to feel different, stay with us this month as we explore what may be behind it.

🧠 Hearing is not just about your ears.

At Hoffman Audiology, we see hearing as part of whole-body health. It is closely linked to brain function, balance, emotional well-being, independence and relationships.

Throughout this year, we will explore how different health factors, life stages and long-term conditions can influence hearing. Some may contribute to hearing loss, while others make listening more difficult, even without changes in the ears themselves.

✨ Our aim is to educate and raise awareness so that early signs are easier to recognise, and conversations about hearing health feel clearer and more comfortable.

💬 Do you have a question about hearing health?

Feel free to leave it in the comments. We would love to answer your questions in future posts.

Food choices, cholesterol levels, and smoking habits are usually discussed in the context of heart health.

But they also affect hearing.

The inner ear relies on healthy circulation and oxygen-rich blood to function properly. High cholesterol can reduce blood flow, and smoking damages blood vessels and oxygen delivery throughout the body, including to the ears.

Hearing changes linked to lifestyle factors are often gradual. You might notice listening effort, fatigue, or clarity changes before you notice volume loss.

Now is a great time to support your health in small, sustainable ways. Balanced nutrition, hydration, and addressing smoking habits can benefit your heart, your brain, and your hearing.

04/02/2026

High blood pressure is usually discussed in terms of heart attack and stroke risk, but it can affect more than your heart.

Your inner ear relies on tiny, delicate blood vessels to deliver oxygen and nutrients. Over time, consistently high blood pressure can damage these small vessels and reduce blood flow to the parts of the ear that help you hear clearly.

That’s why hearing changes linked to blood pressure can be so easy to miss. It often shows up as effort first, not silence. You might notice that conversations feel harder to follow in noisy places, that you feel tired after social situations, or that certain sounds feel less clear than they used to.

There are also a few extra signs people often brush off:
➡️Ringing or buzzing (tinnitus)
➡️ A blocked or “clogged” ear feeling that comes and goes
➡️ Feeling unsteady or off balance

The good news is that awareness helps. If you are already monitoring your blood pressure, a yearly hearing test is a simple way to track changes early and build a baseline.

If you have high blood pressure, or you love someone who does, consider adding hearing checks to your regular health routine.

Exercise is usually talked about in terms of fitness and heart health.

But regular movement also supports circulation to the inner ear, brain function, stress levels, and sleep, all of which play a role in how well you hear and process sound.

Hearing changes are often gradual. Many people notice effort first, not silence. Conversations feel harder, especially in noise, and listening becomes tiring.

The good news is that you don’t need extreme workouts. Consistent, enjoyable movement that supports circulation can benefit both your heart and your hearing.

Your ears are more than just hearing organs. They’re a window into your heart health. ❤️🩺

January is often when we reset.

We focus on our bodies, our stress, our sleep, and how we want to feel this year.

What many people don’t realise is that cardiovascular health is also deeply connected to hearing, balance, memory, and how well your brain processes sound.

Your ears rely on healthy blood flow to function properly.
Over time, things like stress, poor sleep, high blood pressure, cholesterol, and fatigue can affect circulation and when circulation is affected, hearing can be too.

This month, we’re unpacking why looking after your heart also means looking after your hearing.

Because hearing health is whole-body health.
