1 step at a time

1 step at a time Follow me on my hiking trails, join me on my retreats, eat from my kitchen, come litchi picking with me, help me empower our youth and have some FUN!

1 Step at a Time is all we need to move forward, change and make a difference in our lives and in the community. We are a Mom and Daughter team setting out on a 500km journey along the Turkish Coast called 'The Lycian Way' to raise funds for the North Coast Courier Fund under the Zimbali Rotary Banner. We believe that pushing ourselves out of our comfort zone brings about change and also a most amazing feeling of really living. A different culture, new customs, strange language, nature at its best, the great outdoors, bonding, physical exertion, blisters, aching bodies and much much more is what lies ahead in the month to come. Show us you support along the way by contributing to the North Coast Courier Fund via the Zimbali Rotary bank account with the reference ' 1 step at a time'

A stunning trail walk from Malelane Gate in the Kruger, another tick on a very long list. Such an awesome experience exploring the bush and being up close with Hyena, giraffe, buffalo, Hippo, Rhino even a small 6 month old Rhino. A few scary moments but hugely informative and enjoyable. Thanks for sharing this all with me my Amberlina !

Reality has set in and this epic journey is fading into a kaleidoscope of awesome memories and magic moments.
Nothing beats pushing yourself out of your comfort zone, setting yourself a challenge and living your dream, it brings about change, huge growth and an amazing sense of accomplishment.
It also comes with Fear, uncertainty and doubt but overcoming all of those releases an inner personal power than can be drawn on time and time again when the going gets tough. Sharing this experience with my daughter was very precious, special and enlightening and I have been blessed with a treasure trove of magnificent memories that will last a lifetime.Onto a more serious note we embarked on this trip for numerous reasons one of them being to raise funds for The North Coast Courier Orphan Fund which has been around for many years helping the needy in our community. The closing date for contributions and donations is the 31st of May and we would love to be able to make a difference in some children's lives. Please open your hearts and help us end this amazing trip with a bang - Any amount big or small will be appreciated and we thank those of you that have already contributed. South Africa to most Turks does not feature on the world map when we say where we from, they reply with Where and in what country is that ? Then it follows with, Oh you must have moved there from somewhere else cause you white ???
Most information given is not accurate, 500m down the road is actually 2km, there is a bus coming could be today tomorrow or the next day, the tram costs 12 Lire could actually mean 20 or 30 Lire. It's all just to please and give an answer even if incorrect. Every shop we pass it's hello Lady, Yes Please.
It's been a journey and stories abound but alas like all good things everything must come to an end. We said a heartsore goodbye to our trusted sticks that helped us through many a jam and where given to us by a dear old Turkish lady in Sidyma that couldn't speak a word of English but relayed all her feelings through her actions and eyes. Feeling so so blessed and very grateful for this amazing experience.

This stretch was very steep and isolated but so beautiful. You reach a lighthouse and think that's it, we are up now but there is probably still another 3 to 4km of uphill. We where missing in action for most of the day as the tracker lost signal. We did a lot of scrambling over rocks and under trees and our bodies where seriously worse for wear on our arrival in Adrasan. Then onto the beautiful ruins of Olympos and the quant little town of Cirali. Everyday a new adventure !

Please remember to support our worthy cause- North Coast Courier Orphan Fund.

Heidie Smith and her daughter, Amber Mendes took some well-deserved time off and traded land for sea when they hopped onto a boat to go and see the sunken city.

For me its : Live life, push boundaries, be more than you ever thought you could be, love with all your heart and soul ! For you it might be something totally different but whatever it is do it whole heartedly and with everything you have. This trip has blown me away with its beauty, splendour and magic around every corner. It has also made me think about the simplicity of life and what is really needed for happiness and peace of mind.
