A small change making a big difference, the NSRI is introducing compact new tractors to tow JetRIBs, easing the load on crews and boosting efficiency on the sand. With better traction, lower maintenance, and diesel-powered reliability, these tractors are set to become essential gear at stations nationwide. 🚜🌊

What began as a calm fishing trip in early May turned into a life-or-death struggle for Durban paddlers Ameer and Ahmed. Separated by fatigue and swept by wind, one made the toughest call, to leave his friend and get help. Thanks to NSRI Durban and the quick-thinking crew of Medavu SA, both men were rescued and reunited. Their story is a powerful reminder of courage, community and the lifesaving value of being prepared. 🛶🌊

During the night, Monday 11 April, and into this morning, NSRI rescue teams have been inundated with emergency calls and are continuing to assist in flood-related incidents involving local citizens, domestic and farm animals and wildlife.

NSRI and the emergency services authorities are appealing to the public to stay safe, do not try to cross through flooded rivers and waterways, do not try to drive over flooded bridges and stay on higher ground.

The emergency number to call in life-threatening emergencies is 112 - from a cellphone.

You may have noticed the lovely bright pink rescue bouys placed strategically throughout the country.

These bouys are vital to rescuers and bystanders, in the event of an emergency, to get floatation to a drowning victim.

To date pink rescue bouys have saved 80+ lives, and continue to do so. As we head into the busy festive season, it is more important than ever that these bouys are at their locations, ready for use.

If you notice someone with one and they are not busy with a rescue, please ask them to return it to it’s location, ready to save the next life. As always, please use our beaches and oceans responsibly this December.
