An early morning goodbye to Santiago de Compostela. Now for the long haul back home. Walking 3,8 km to the bus station. Driving 3 hours and 5 minutes (yes that is all!) back to Porto. Flying back tonight.

Day 14: We made it! With lots of aches and pains and a happy heart. Started super early before 7 am and already there were lots of pilgrims on the road. 24 km later, past some amazing churches and beautiful forests, we were amongst the hundreds of pilgrims streaming to the cathedral - in the rain! Whoops of joy echoed on the plaza in front of the cathedral. We have reached our goal. After a total of 320 km, following mostly the Litoral Way, some of the Coastal Way, The Spiritual Variant and the Central Way, we can rest our feet.

Day 12: Another beautiful magical day from the vineyard village of Barrantes to Vilanova de Arousa. 18 km. Easy on the feet. Along rivers. In shade. And yes, we swam! The Spiritual Variant, also called the Stone and Water Route, is definitely worth the detour.

Day 11: After a much needed day of rest in Combarro we headed out early this morning to tackle the dreaded mountain. An Afrikaans saying says it best: “Gogga maak vir baba bang”. Before we knew it we were high up on the mountain breathing in the fresh eucalyptus air. Bought rose oil at the 11th century Monastery of Santa María in Armenteira. And then the most magnificent fairy woods - the path of stone and water - transported us into another dimension. All the different shades of green: leaves, ferns, moss; and the calming sound of the river. We did not want to leave. Eventually the crystal clear river won and we put our feet in the ice-cold water. A metallic blue damselfly landed on my hand. Later we lied down in the grass under a tree. Time did not exist. Tonight we sleep in Barrantes, a village full of vineyards. 18 km.

Day 10: Today we took the road less traveled - the Spiritual Route. It is an extra three days, with a massive climb to the Monastery of Armenteira, but absolutely worth it as very few pilgrims walk this path. We had a leisurely walk of 13 km from Pontevedra (with its beautiful pedestrian bridge) to Combarro. And tomorrow we are having a rest day! (To build up the strength for that climb. 😉)

Day 9: Up and down and up and down through endless (and yes, beautiful) forests today from Cesantes to Pontevedra. With, what feels like, hundreds of other (talking) pilgrims, on foot and on bikes. Over two mountains. And our knees and achilles are moaning. Tomorrow we take the Spiritual Route, a quieter way, but with a massive mountain to cross the following day.

Day 7: What a magical day through THE most beautiful forests - the fact that it was drizzling the whole time actually made it more special as the different colours of green popped you right into fairy land. Very steep upward to begin with, but what a fabulous surprise to be immersed in green forest bathing for nearly most of the day! Walked 20,5 km from Vigo to Cesantes (past Redondela where the Litoral/Coastal rejoins the Central Route - and we experienced that: MANY more fellow pilgrims!)

Day 6: Another BEAUTIFUL (and long) day from Baiona to Vigo, a huge city. We walked past such amazing beaches we had to stop early afternoon and swim as well. I love how encounters on the camino send you magic moments - a random woman along the path showed us to a cathedral. The cathedral for sea farers Templo Votivo del Mar and Virgen del Carmen with the ruins of its 6th century chapel just below.

Day 5: The long and winding (dare I say gruelling) road from La Guardia to Baiona; a whopping 31,3 km along the coast, through small coastal villages, a part through the devastating forest fires of a few months ago, over a glacier rock mountain and, some parts along the road with what feels like speeding cars. Emotional rollercoaster day with lots of desperate yelling and laughing. We started just past 7am IN THE DARK and arrived just past 6pm, absolutely exhausted.

Day 5: A leisurely slow day of 15 km from Praia de Âncora to A Guarda, taking a water taxi into Spain! I picked up a snakeskin as a going away present from Portugal - to the horror of a fellow pilgrim (it is toxic!). We arrived in the early afternoon (although suddenly we were an hour ahead), dropped our stuff and went for a swim. Fabulously cold water.
