Step inside the world’s quietest place—an anechoic chamber—and you’ll discover that silence isn’t always peaceful.

With no outside sound, you start to hear your heartbeat, joints moving, even blood rushing in your ears. Stay too long, and your brain struggles to handle the lack of input—some people last only a few minutes!

👂 Your ears (and brain) are designed to process sound. When there’s none, the experience can feel louder than noise.

🌀 Balance Awareness Week | September 14–20
Balance plays a critical role in our daily lives—and as we age, staying steady becomes even more important for our independence and safety.

📊 1 in 4 older adults report falling each year, and untreated hearing loss can increase the risk of falls by 30%.

Here’s why hearing health matters:
👂 Your inner ear contains the vestibular system—your balance control center.
🧠 Hearing loss increases cognitive load, leaving fewer brain resources for balance and movement.
👀 Hearing loss reduces environmental awareness, making tripping and falling more likely.

💡 Good News: Wearing hearing aids can cut the risk of falls by up to 50%!
Starkey’s Edge AI hearing aids go further with a Balance Assessment feature in the My Starkey app—giving you insight into your balance performance and tips to stay steady.

➡️ This Balance Awareness Week, talk to your hearing care professional about better hearing and better balance—because safety starts with awareness.

👂 September is Deaf Awareness Month

This month is dedicated to celebrating Deaf culture, highlighting the importance of equal communication, and recognising the experiences of Deaf and hard-of-hearing South Africans. 💙

Did you know that South African Sign Language (SASL) became our 12th official language in 2023?
It was a major step forward for accessibility and inclusion.

But awareness is just the beginning — together, we can make communication open to everyone and keep building a world where no voice or sign is left unheard. 🌍✨

Fun Fact Friday 🎉
Did you know? 👀

Deaf communities around the world have their own unique sign languages! ✋🤟

South African Sign Language (SASL) is completely different from American Sign Language (ASL) — even though both are used by Deaf communities, they are not the same. 🌍✨

👉 Just like spoken languages (English, Zulu, Afrikaans, French), sign languages have their own grammar, structure, and culture.

👂🤟 : From Global Advocacy to South Africa’s Deaf Awareness Month

In September 1951, the first World Congress of the World Federation of the Deaf was held — a turning point for Deaf rights and recognition worldwide. 🌍

Fast forward to today:
South Africa marks 1–30 September as National Deaf Awareness Month, celebrating Deaf culture, raising awareness about hearing health, and honoring South African Sign Language (SASL) — now our 12th official language.

This September, let’s throw back to how it started… and celebrate how far we’ve come. 💙

👂⚡️ : The First Electric Hearing Aid (1901)

Before Bluetooth and AI, there was "The Akouphone" — the world’s first electric hearing aid, created in 1901 by Miller Reese Hutchison.
It was bulky, battery-powered, and had wires… but it amplified sound for the first time using electricity! ⚡️

📻 It paved the way for every modern hearing aid we know today.

Spring is here — a season of fresh colour, sunshine, and joyful sounds. 🌸🐦
But without good hearing, many of those little everyday moments can fade into silence.

With hearing aids, the world comes alive again — laughter, music, birdsong, and conversations all return, just like spring itself. 🌞

This Deaf Awareness Month, let’s celebrate the sounds of the season and support those who may be missing them.

👉 If you or someone you love is struggling to hear the sounds of spring, consult your nearest hearing care professional for advice and support.

🦟 The Most Annoying Sound in the World?
It’s not nails on a chalkboard…
It’s the high-pitched whine of a mosquito — and there’s science behind why!

🔊 That sound typically sits around 17,000–20,000 Hz, right at the upper limit of human hearing.
🎧 Our ears are naturally sensitive to these frequencies because they signal danger (like buzzing insects or alarms).

😖 The pitch is hard to localize, impossible to ignore, and triggers our brain’s threat alert system.

Verdict: Most annoying?
✅ Science says… yes.

“If you thought Lorraine was the problem… it might be time for a hearing check. 😄”

Mishearing songs is funny — mishearing conversations, not so much.
If lyrics, dialogue, or voices are starting to sound unclear, don’t ignore it.

👂 Book a hearing test today and start hearing life clearly again.
