Severe sound sensitivity after wax removal can happen in some patients, especially after long-standing earwax impaction. Once the blockage is removed, normal environmental sounds may suddenly feel extremely loud or overwhelming because the ear has readjusted to hearing again. Some patients describe it as hearing “everything,” even tiny sounds.

This can sometimes resemble hyperacusis, where ordinary sounds become uncomfortably loud. Symptoms may include:

Difficulty sleeping due to sound sensitivity

Wind or background noise sounding amplified

Irritation or discomfort with everyday sounds

Anxiety around noisy environments

The irritation can also be temporary after irrigation if the ear canal or eardrum becomes sensitive during the procedure.

✅ Ear irrigation remains one of the safer and commonly used methods for managing impacted wax when performed correctly by trained professionals.
⚠️ Patients should still be monitored for complications such as dizziness, pain, infection, tinnitus, or persistent sound sensitivity after the procedure.

If symptoms continue or worsen, a full audiological and ENT assessment is important to rule out middle or inner ear involvement.

The “don’t put anything smaller than your elbow in your ear” rule is commonly used to warn people against inserting objects into the ear canal. Using cotton buds, keys, pins, or sharp tools can push earwax impaction deeper, injure the canal, or even cause a perforated eardrum.

A good rule:
✅ Clean only the outer ear with a damp cloth
🚫 Don’t insert objects into the ear canal
⚠️ If you have pain, blocked hearing, ringing, or discharge — get it checked professionally

The ear is delicate and hearing damage can sometimes be permanent.

⚠️ From an audiologist’s perspective — this is dangerous 👂🏽

Using sharp objects to remove earwax impaction is extremely risky and can lead to serious complications, including a perforated eardrum, infections, and ongoing discharge.

🚫 Never use sharp objects to clean your ears.
Safe removal should always be done by a qualified professional.

This is why regular ear checks matter 👂🏽

Videos like this highlight how easily earwax impaction can build up unnoticed. Routine screening by an audiologist helps detect and safely remove wax before it affects your hearing.

👂 Did you know?
Wax impaction is one of the most common ear problems we see. When earwax builds up too much, it can block the ear canal and cause:
✅ Ear pain or discomfort
✅ Itching inside the ear
✅ Hearing loss or muffled sounds
✅ Ringing in the ear (tinnitus)
✅ Dizziness in some cases

🔎 With a simple otoscope check, we can identify if you have wax impaction.

💡 Treatment:

We may soften the wax with ear drops

Professional wax removal in our clinic (safe & effective)

Avoid using earbuds or sharp objects – they push the wax deeper and make things worse

🔎 What is Hearing Screening?
Hearing screening is a quick and simple process where an audiologist looks inside your ear using an otoscope. This helps us detect early signs of problems before they become bigger concerns.

👂 Why is Hearing Screening Important?

Detects ear infections early

Identifies earwax buildup that can block hearing

Spots conditions like otitis media (middle ear problems)

Monitors for perforated eardrum or other abnormalities

Ensures your hearing health is protected

✨ A few minutes of screening can save you from long-term hearing challenges.

I’ve struggled with hearing in my left ear for years and was close to needing hearing aids. Last September, I went to a specialist and was diagnosed with moderate sensorineural hearing loss in both ears, with more decline expected. A year later, I finally got hearing aids and I'm incredibly grateful🥰
