Hearing Loss and Aging in Men: Why Healthy Hearing Supports Healthy Aging

Untreated hearing loss has been linked to cognitive decline, depression, and social isolation. We’re highlighting why healthy hearing supports healthy aging, and how professionals can help more men take action early.

As men age, physical health often becomes more of a focus—but hearing health is still commonly overlooked. Yet research shows that hearing loss is not just an inconvenience of aging—it’s closely tied to brain health, emotional wellbeing, and overall quality of life.

What is listening fatigue and is it treatable?

As the social demands increase during this time of year—with everything from public holidays to graduation parties upon us—today’s hearing fact raises important awareness of “additional fatigue” that people with untreated hearing loss may be experiencing in their everyday lives: listening fatigue.

Study shows hearing aids reduce listening-related fatigue and increase social activity.

Signs of Hearing Loss

It can be easier to recognize when our eyesight begins to deteriorate. Indeed, we notice more quickly when we have problems reading the small font size on labels, so we head to the optician. But what about our hearing? It is not always so simple with our ears, and it usually takes longer to realize something is wrong. Noticing early signs of hearing loss can help us to find a solution more quickly.

The link between hearing loss and risk of falls

Over time, maintaining our independence and safety becomes increasingly important. One often overlooked factor that significantly impacts these aspects would be hearing loss. Untreated hearing loss not only affects our communication but also increases the risk of falls, which can lead to serious injuries.

Research has shown that untreated hearing loss can increase the likelihood of falls by up to 30%. This heightened risk can be attributed to several factors:
1. Impaired awareness: Hearing loss can reduce our awareness of our surroundings and this can make it easier to lose balance.
2. Cognitive load: When the brain is preoccupied with trying to understand sounds it has less capacity to focus on balance and coordination.
The prevalence of hearing loss in older South Africans are also notable with estimates suggesting that around 30% of individuals over 60 experience some form of hearing impairment.

Even a mild degree of hearing loss triples the risk of an accidental fall.

Starkey hearing aids: a solution to enhance safety
Starkey hearing aids, particularly the latest models like the Genesis AI offer innovative features that can help mitigate the risks associated with untreated hearing loss. These hearing aids not only improve auditory perception but also come equipped with advanced technology designed to enhance safety:

Fall detection: Starkey’s Genesis AI hearing aids as well as the Evolv platform include fall detection features. This involves an app-based feature that utilizes sensors in the hearing aids to detect when the person falls, it then sends an alert message to chosen family members, friends or caregivers.
The importance of addressing hearing loss

Addressing hearing loss is not just about improving communication; it is also a critical step in enhancing overall safety and quality of life. By managing hearing loss with such hearing aids individuals can significantly reduce the risk of falls and maintain independence.

Studies have also revealed that individuals who wear hearing aids have a 50% decreased likelihood of falling.
By investing in hearing health individuals can protect themselves from the dangers of falls and enjoy a safe, more independent life.
