What is CAIRS?
Customised CAIRS (Corneal Allogenic Intrastromal Ring Segment) treatment is a minimally invasive corneal procedure primarily used to treat keratoconus and certain types of irregular corneal astigmatism.
-Concept: Instead of using synthetic intrastromal corneal ring segments (ICRS), CAIRS uses donor corneal tissue shaped into ring segments.
-Placement: These natural tissue ring segments are inserted into channels within the cornea to reshape and stabilize it.
-Technology: The treatment is typically done with femtosecond laser precision, ensuring accurate placement and minimal disruption.
What does it treat?
-Keratoconus: A progressive condition where the cornea thins and bulges into a cone-like shape, causing distorted vision.
-Pellucid Marginal Degeneration or similar corneal ectasias.
-Post-refractive surgery corneal irregularities (in selected cases).
Why customised?
-Each patient’s corneal shape and severity of ectasia is unique.
-The size, thickness, and placement of the tissue ring segments are tailored to the individual’s corneal anatomy and visual needs.
-Often combined with corneal cross-linking (CXL) for added biomechanical stability.
Benefits of customised CAIRS over synthetic ICRS
-Uses biological tissue, which integrates better and may reduce complications such as glare or extrusion.
-Can be removed or adjusted if necessary.
-Preserves future treatment options like corneal transplantation.
