Today is Osteoathritis Awareness Day! Let us look at protecting your joints:

- FACT! Exercise does not wear out joints, but rather strengthens and protects them.
- Always warm-up and cool down when engaging in physical activity - Skipping your warm-up can put your joints at a higher risk of strain and overloading on your muscles and joints, putting them at risk for injury.
- Listen to your body’s cues - Joint pain after exercise is telling you there is something wrong (we suggest then to consult with a Biokineticist to prescribe an individualised program).
- Balancing low-impact exercises with your higher impact activities to strengthen the muscles that help protect your joints.
- Increase the flexibility of your joints by warming and stretching before and after exercise - When a joint is stiff, it can alter the stresses seen during activities and it’s more prone to swelling, which can weaken the muscles protecting the joint.
- Plan to quit smoking - Smoking and to***co use are risk factors for cardiovascular problems to cancer and can hamper your joints.
- Replace energy drinks and soda with water - Water makes up about 80 percent of your body’s cartilage (the flexible, connective tissue that cushions your joints).
- Don’t let extra weight overtax your joints
- Wear the right shoes - Regardless of the activity, shoes should provide cushioning, stability, and comfort while being flexible.

📜The History of Biokinetics - PART ONE (1 of 4)
Young boys who joined the Defence Force in the 1930’s, but who weren’t fit for military
service, underwent a special programme of “Remedial Physical Education.” Two of the
people that played an important role in these programmes were Dr. Ernst Jokl (a medical
doctor) and Dr. Danie Craven. Dr. Jokl was also the founder of the Department of Physical
Education at the Stellenbosch University in 1936.
The outbreak of World War II resulted in many non-fatal casualties like amputations. These
soldiers were also treated using remedial programmes.
This programme of the Defence Force
was terminated in 1946 and transferred to the Department of Education that continued the
programme in Kimberley.

Movement may be diminished or lost due to hereditary, ageing, injury or disease. Such loss may occur gradually over the course of a lifetime, or traumatically in an instant. Additionally, conditions or movement loss that are linked with chronic and disabling disease pose additional challenges for patients and their families.

Move your mood 💪😁

Welcome to day one of Exercise Right Week 2022 🥳. Today's theme is "move your mood" and it's all about the mental health benefits of exercise.

Being active is one of the best ways to improve your mood and mental well-being and can also help to prevent mental health conditions like anxiety and depression.

In fact, research has shown that as little as one hour a week can help to protect against depression ⏰!

For those living with a mental health condition, exercising can help to manage symptoms and, in some cases, may even help to treat conditions like (mild to moderate) anxiety.

It’s important to get expert advice though. Accredited Exercise Physiologists are uniquely qualified to prescribe exercise to those struggling with their mental health and can help to facilitate long-term behaviour change.

We’ve got some great resources to help you learn more about exercise and mental health, as well as some incredible stories of everyday Australians who have used the power of movement to help navigate challenges with their own mental health.

Biokinetics and Neurology:
While it was previously believed that the adult nervous system is static, rigid and unalterable, researchers began to discover growth and reorganization of neurons in the adult central nervous system following neural injury such as stroke. Biokineticists can aid in the recovery of function following neural injury or pathology. In fact Parkinson's disease progression, as an example, has been re****ed and functional capacity improved in those who started with appropriate rehabilitation in the early stages of disease. Biokinetics guided rehabilitation will help with the recovery of function, prognosis of neural conditions as well as prevention of secondary complications arising from physical inactivity.

Please join us at our free live event this Tuesday 7pm on Global Move for Health Day, featuring panel discussion including Biokineticist Justin Jeffery who has a keen interest in Neurological Rehabilitation. Register here on www.biosaletsmove.co.za

Ask your nearest Biokineticist how to safely add high intensity exercise to your work outs to help add years to your life 😊

According to research, those who do a higher proportion of vigorous physical activity show a lower risk of early death from all causes.

One study revealed that bumping up your physical activity to meet 150 minutes of high-intensity exercise per week can give your cardiovascular and musculoskeletal systems a healthy boost.

“In general, vigorous activity simply yields larger improvement than moderate activity in areas like cardiorespiratory fitness and functional capacity,” says Carol Mack, D.P.T., C.S.C.S. These advantages can lead to lower prevalence of chronic disease that might raise the risk of early mortality.

This isn’t to say that you should abandon your current moderate-level exercises! Instead, consider mixing in some vigorous activity to your routine for additional long term benefits.

What does vigorous activity look like? This particular study defined vigorous activity as at least 10 minutes of exercise causing heavy sweating or large increases in breathing or heart rate. SWEAT IS GOOD 💧 👍

Not sure how to safely introduce high-intensity exercises? Speak to a professional who knows exercise best like an Exercise Physiologist!

Parkinsons disease causes rigidity and it limits one’s flexibility. This will lead to difficulties in balance.

Balance difficulties opens up those with Parkinson’s disease to an increased risk of falls and the serious consequences that comes along with those falls.

A Biokineticist can help by formulating scientifically based exercise prescriptions targeting balance and proprioception. With this regular exercise prescription a Biokineticist can assist with decreasing or delaying the secondary effects targeting the musculoskeletal and cardiorespiratory systems.

Let a Biokineticist help by improving this balance and walking for you. You can find a Biokineticist near you on www.biokineticsSA.org.za.
