We recently presented to school staff about childhood apraxia of speech, and one of the biggest takeaways was this: apraxia doesnβt only affect how a child speaks. It can influence multiple areas of their school experience.
Many learners with apraxia work incredibly hard to communicate, and that effort can spill over into:
πΉ Behaviour and frustration tolerance
πΉ Difficulty with on-demand speech during class activities
πΉ Challenges with testing or oral assessments
πΉ Social understanding, confidence, and peer interactions
πΉ Co-occurring conditions that impact learning
πΉ Hidden symptoms like anxiety, word-finding difficulties, and emotional fatigue
For teachers, this knowledge is powerful. It helps us shift from βWhy is this child struggling?β to βHow can we support this child better?β
When we understand the full picture, we create classrooms that feel safer, calmer, and more inclusive for every learner, especially those who communicate differently. π
If your school would like training or support around apraxia, speech development, or classroom strategies, Weβd be happy to help. Letβs empower our learners together. πβ¨
