Sensory Matters OT

Sensory Matters OT Sensory Matters Is a paediatric occupational therapy practice in Bedfordview, Edenvale and Benoni.

Sensory Matters Occupational Therapists was started in 2008 by Jacklynn Langkilde and Jacqui Jorge. We have since established a practice in Bedfordview at Therapyworx and in Benoni and have a team of 6 full time therapists and 3 locum therapists. Our team is comprised of dynamic, dedicated and passionate occupational therapists. We have a special interest in treating fussy babies, infants and children with developmental delay, autism, learning difficulties, ADHD, behavioural challenges and sensory processing difficulties. In addition to this we host journal club groups for other occupational therapists in our area, mentor and train students and offer workshops to OT's, teachers and parents. Our own therapists are all either Sensory Integration trained or in the process of obtaining their SI training. This together with other short courses and training opportunities help to keep our intervention relevant and up to date to offer comprehensive service to our clients and their families.

✨ What Are Fine Motor Skills? ✨

When we talk about fine motor (FM) skills we’re talking about the small, precise movements we make with the muscles in our hands and fingers.

These skills are the foundation for so many everyday activities children do, like:
✏️ Holding a pencil or crayon
✂️ Using scissors
🧩 Manipulating toys or puzzles
👕 Buttoning clothes or tying shoelaces
🍴 Feeding themselves with utensils

Fine motor skills aren’t just about hand strength - they also involve:
🔹 Dexterity (using fingers with control)
🔹 Hand–eye coordination (what the eyes see, the hands can do)
🔹 Bilateral coordination (using both hands together smoothly)
🔹 And so much more...

Why does this matter?
Strong fine motor skills support a child’s independence, confidence, and participation in play, school, and self-care.

🌀 Spinal Galant Reflex – The “Hip Wiggle” Reflex

The Spinal Galant Reflex develops in the womb and is present at birth.

Why it’s important:
- Supports proper hip and spine development
- Helps with crawling and core stability
- Prepares the nervous system for bladder and bowel control
- Supports early balance and movement coordination

If retained it can lead to:
- Wiggles or squirms in chair constantly
- Easily distracted by clothing tags or waistbands
- Bedwetting beyond expected age
- Overly ticklish on lower back
- Difficulty sitting still for tasks
- Fidgeting or leaning against furniture
- Over-reactive to touch on back
- Poor focus during seated work
- Disruptive behavior at desk
- Hyperactivity in classroom

⚖️ TLR – The “Balance & Head Position” Reflex

The Tonic Labyrinthine Reflex (TLR) is a primitive reflex that helps babies learn how to manage their head, neck, and body in space. It’s linked to the vestibular system - the part of the brain that tells us where our body is in relation to gravity.

Why it’s important:
- Helps babies develop posture and head control
- Supports rolling, sitting, crawling, and later, balance
- Prepares the nervous system for upright movement
- Affects eye-hand coordination and core strength

If retained it can lead to:
- Poor balance in motion
- Fear of heights
- Difficulty riding scooters/bikes
- Easily overwhelmed in open spaces
- Arching back or flopping forward
- Slumped posture
- Disinterest in movement-based play
- Trouble climbing or descending
- Poor strength in upright positions
- Difficulty jumping or leaping

Ever see your child:🛋️ Slumped over at the table?🖍️ Leaning on one arm while colouring?💺 W-sitting like a human pretzel?...

Ever see your child:
🛋️ Slumped over at the table?
🖍️ Leaning on one arm while colouring?
💺 W-sitting like a human pretzel?

This could be a sign of weak trunk control & postural stability-AKA, the core strength needed to sit upright, focus, and move with ease. 🏋️‍♀️

Think of your child’s core like the foundation of a house. Without a strong base, everything built on top (fine motor skills, handwriting, even attention) wobbles!

Signs of weak trunk control:
🔹 Fidgeting or leaning on furniture
🔹 Fatigue after short, seated tasks
🔹 Poor balance or coordination

💡 A strong core = better focus, coordination, and confidence in everyday activities!
