Sensory Matters OT

Sensory Matters OT Sensory Matters Is a paediatric occupational therapy practice in Bedfordview, Edenvale and Benoni.

Sensory Matters Occupational Therapists was started in 2008 by Jacklynn Langkilde and Jacqui Jorge. We have since established a practice in Bedfordview at Therapyworx and in Benoni and have a team of 6 full time therapists and 3 locum therapists. Our team is comprised of dynamic, dedicated and passionate occupational therapists. We have a special interest in treating fussy babies, infants and chil

dren with developmental delay, autism, learning difficulties, ADHD, behavioural challenges and sensory processing difficulties. In addition to this we host journal club groups for other occupational therapists in our area, mentor and train students and offer workshops to OT's, teachers and parents. Our own therapists are all either Sensory Integration trained or in the process of obtaining their SI training. This together with other short courses and training opportunities help to keep our intervention relevant and up to date to offer comprehensive service to our clients and their families.

๐Ÿง ๐Ÿ’“ The Interoceptive System: The Hidden Sense That Guides the Inside World

Interoception is your bodyโ€™s internal messaging system - it tells your brain whatโ€™s happening inside you.

It helps you notice and interpret signals like hunger, thirst, pain, needing the toilet, body temperature, heart rate, and emotional states like anxiety or excitement.

Why is it important?
โœ” Helps identify physical needs (e.g. โ€œI need to eatโ€ or โ€œIโ€™m tiredโ€)
โœ” Supports toilet training and continence
โœ” Plays a key role in self-regulation and emotional awareness
โœ” Allows children to respond appropriately to internal signals (e.g. rest, hydrate, calm down)
โœ” Builds body-mind connection and helps develop emotional intelligence

When interoception is underdeveloped or disrupted, a child may struggle to interpret or act on what their body is telling them - often leading to meltdowns, toileting issues, or emotional outbursts without clear cause.

๐Ÿšฉ Red Flags to Look Out For:
- Doesnโ€™t notice when theyโ€™re hungry, full, tired, hot, or cold
- Struggles with toilet training or ignores the urge to go
- Doesnโ€™t seem to notice pain or injury or overreacts to minor discomfort
- Has frequent emotional outbursts without understanding why
- Canโ€™t name or describe how they feel inside (e.g. โ€œI donโ€™t know whatโ€™s wrongโ€)
- Difficulty with self-regulation (e.g. calming themselves, recognising rising frustration)
- Often unaware of basic physical needs like thirst or needing a break

Supporting interoception can help children better understand and respond to their internal world - leading to improved regulation, independence, and emotional well-being.

๐Ÿ‘€ The Visual System: More Than Just Sight

The visual system helps us understand and respond to what we see - itโ€™s not just about having 20/20 vision, but about how the brain makes sense of visual information.

It plays a crucial role in learning, coordination, reading, movement, and how we experience our environment.

Why is it important?
โœ” Helps us recognize letters, numbers, shapes, and patterns
โœ” Supports reading, writing, copying from the board, and spatial awareness
โœ” Affects balance, coordination, and movement through space
โœ” Helps with hand-eye coordination (e.g. catching a ball or using scissors)
โœ” Supports focus and organization in busy visual environments (like classrooms)

Even with perfect eyesight, a child may struggle with visual processing - the brain's ability to organize and interpret what the eyes see.

๐Ÿšฉ Red Flags to Look Out For:
- Struggles to copy from the board or track across a page
- Complains of headaches or eye fatigue during schoolwork
- Avoids reading, writing, or drawing
- Loses place when reading or skips lines
- Poor hand-eye coordination (difficulty catching, throwing, or using tools)
- Easily overwhelmed in visually busy spaces
- Closes one eye, squints, or tilts head to look at objects
- Trouble with puzzles, spatial tasks, or sorting shapes and sizes

Supporting visual processing can help children become more confident learners, movers, and explorers.

๐Ÿ‘ƒ The Olfactory System: The Sense of Smell

The olfactory system helps us detect odours (pleasant and unpleasant) and is directly linked to the emotional brain.

It plays a vital role in bonding, safety, appetite, and emotional memory.

Why is it important?
โœ” Helps detect danger (e.g. smoke, gas, spoiled food)
โœ” Supports bonding and comfort through familiar scents
โœ” Influences appetite and food acceptance
โœ” Contributes to emotional regulation
โœ” Affects tolerance in sensory-rich environments (e.g. school, shops)

When a child is sensitive to smell, they may become overwhelmed in certain environments or avoid everyday tasks like eating or grooming.

๐Ÿšฉ Red Flags to Look Out For:
- Overreacts to smells like perfumes, soaps, food, or cleaning products
- Refuses certain environments due to strong smells
- Strong food aversions linked to smell rather than taste
- Constantly sniffs objects or people
- Doesnโ€™t seem to notice strong smells (under-responsive)
- Smell triggers emotional outbursts or distress

Supporting the sense of smell can reduce emotional triggers and help children feel more in control in everyday situations.

๐Ÿ‘… The Gustatory System: The Sense of Taste

The gustatory system helps us detect flavours (sweet, salty, sour, bitter, and umami) and plays an important role in eating, enjoyment, and safety.

But taste is more than just flavour - it connects deeply to comfort, memory, and regulation.

Why is it important?
โœ” Supports safe eating and food variety
โœ” Helps detect spoiled or unsafe foods
โœ” Contributes to oral motor development
โœ” Influences appetite, hydration, and nutrition
โœ” Plays a role in emotional and sensory regulation

Children with taste sensitivities may become extremely selective, avoid oral input, or seek out intense flavours like spicy, salty, or sour foods.

๐Ÿšฉ Red Flags to Look Out For:
- Extremely picky eater, accepts only a few flavours or textures
- Gags or vomits with certain tastes or smells
- Craves very spicy, sour, salty, or crunchy foods constantly
- Avoids brushing teeth or oral hygiene
- Overstuffs mouth or refuses to try new foods
- Frequently chews or mouths non-food objects

Supporting oral sensory processing can help children feel safer with food and improve feeding confidence.

๐ŸŒฑ Youth Day reminds us of the powerful potential in every child.
We stand with South Africa in remembering the history that shaped this day and the importance of creating spaces where our children feel safe, heard, and free to be themselves.

Today and every day, we celebrate the joy, energy, and brilliance that young people bring to the world.
May we nurture their minds, uplift their voices, and walk beside them with hope. ๐Ÿ’ซ

Executive functioning (EF) is like the brainโ€™s CEO-the part that helps you plan, organize, and follow through on tasks. ๐ŸŒŸ Think of it as the mental toolkit that helps us:
๐Ÿ“… Plan ahead
๐Ÿ“ Organize tasks
โฐ Manage time
๐Ÿค” Make decisions
๐ŸŽฏ Stay focused and finish what we start

Kids (and adults) use EF skills to:
- Follow routines (e.g., getting ready for school)
- Complete homework without getting distracted
- Think before acting (important for emotional control!)
- Switch between tasks without feeling overwhelmed

Signs your child might struggle with EF skills:
โŒ Procrastination
โŒ Difficulty staying organized (hello, messy backpack!)
โŒ Trouble remembering instructions or following through on tasks
โŒ Getting distracted easily or switching from one task to another without finishing
โŒ Emotional outbursts when plans change

Ever see your child:
๐Ÿ›‹๏ธ Slumped over at the table?
๐Ÿ–๏ธ Leaning on one arm while colouring?
๐Ÿ’บ W-sitting like a human pretzel?

This could be a sign of weak trunk control & postural stability-AKA, the core strength needed to sit upright, focus, and move with ease. ๐Ÿ‹๏ธโ€โ™€๏ธ

Think of your childโ€™s core like the foundation of a house. Without a strong base, everything built on top (fine motor skills, handwriting, even attention) wobbles!

Signs of weak trunk control:
๐Ÿ”น Fidgeting or leaning on furniture
๐Ÿ”น Fatigue after short, seated tasks
๐Ÿ”น Poor balance or coordination

๐Ÿ’ก A strong core = better focus, coordination, and confidence in everyday activities!
