Sensory Matters OT

Sensory Matters OT Sensory Matters Is a paediatric occupational therapy practice in Bedfordview, Edenvale and Benoni.

Sensory Matters Occupational Therapists was started in 2008 by Jacklynn Langkilde and Jacqui Jorge. We have since established a practice in Bedfordview at Therapyworx and in Benoni and have a team of 6 full time therapists and 3 locum therapists. Our team is comprised of dynamic, dedicated and passionate occupational therapists. We have a special interest in treating fussy babies, infants and chil

dren with developmental delay, autism, learning difficulties, ADHD, behavioural challenges and sensory processing difficulties. In addition to this we host journal club groups for other occupational therapists in our area, mentor and train students and offer workshops to OT's, teachers and parents. Our own therapists are all either Sensory Integration trained or in the process of obtaining their SI training. This together with other short courses and training opportunities help to keep our intervention relevant and up to date to offer comprehensive service to our clients and their families.

Visual processing makes up several areas that combine what we see with what we do. It allows us to take in visual information, process it and use it to complete motor actions. Most of the time this happens without us even realising it. Visual processing is a big job and includes three main areas that impact our ability to accomplish tasks: visual skills, visual perceptual skills and visual motor skills.

Here are some tips to support eye-hand coordination and visual attention:

Let's talk reflexes and crossing the midline.
Crossing the midline of the body is important because of how it creates connections between the right and left hemispheres of the brain for higher learning.
Children who struggle to cross the midline of the body often have one or more retained primitive reflexes holding them back.
When children cannot cross the midline, you may notice them having trouble with:
👉tracking words across the page (left to right)
👉writing words across the page or issues with letter directionality
👉attention and focus and cannot complete tasks or follow directions
👉is often clumsy and can be emotional

If your child:

👉spins all the time
👉falls, trips over things
👉doesn't like swings or can't stop moving
👉fidgets when sitting
👉gets distracted very easily

This could be the vestibular system not giving the brain stable information about the body and movement.

These are some of the signs that the nervous system may not be working properly:

▪️poor balance and frequent falling
▪️clumsiness and poor coordination
▪️difficulty with posture (slouching and leaning)
▪️difficulty maintaining eye focus (tracking, reading)
▪️sensitivity to movement (gets dizzy, avoids swings)
▪️constantly seeking movement (spinning, jumping, crashing)
▪️poor spatial awareness (bumping into things)
▪️difficulty with motor planning

Spatial relations defines how objects, people and locations are positioned, connected and oriented relative to one another or themselves in space.

Spatial relations are needed for completing physical actions, moving in a crowded space and even handwriting.

Dyspraxia is more than just "clumsiness"

It can look like many different things and show up in everyday moments like when a child struggles to balance, take longer to learn new skills or find simple daily tasks harder than expected.

It can affect how they plan, move organise and even express emotions.

BUT, with the right support these children don't just cope, they thrive 💪

Every child is unique and different when it comes to handwriting. However, there are some stages that may be helpful when looking at a child's writing milestones:

These are some skills to practice for each performance milestone:

1️⃣ offering crayons and paper often for exposure to handwriting tools.
2️⃣ build their muscle strength in their hands and fingers by offering squeeze bottles to grip.
3️⃣ provide lots of opportunities for writing and colouring with different utensils like chalk, markers and dry erase boards.
4️⃣ use tracing sheets with numbers and letters. Continue building hand strength by offering play dough to play with.
