7 years today!🎉🎉

Since 1 December 2016 I have been able to live my dream of owning my own dietetic practice. While it's been the most wonderful and fulfilling experience, these 7 years have taught me many lessons. Patience, determination, acceptance, humility.

Getting through the COVID-19 pandemic and its aftermath was a big part of these 7 years. Although it came with many hurdles, it also came with exciting new opportunities.

I've had the privilege to work with so many people from all different backgrounds and have learned so much through this.

The last year the practice has been through many changes - some good and some bad. While the bad is never something we want, we must take the bad along with the good. These 7 years have also taught me that one should always be willing to adapt to your circumstances and make the best of every situation.

In the coming year, life will look very different. We are expecting a baby girl to join our family in March 2024! While this comes with lots of excitement for our family, it has a definite downside for the practice.

I will henceforth only be practicing from my Benoni office and my availability for appointments will change to accommodate my new family responsibilities. While this is a big change personally and professionally, I am looking forward to this new chapter! There will surely be a whole set of new challenges, but my passion for dietetics is not lost.

I look forward to share this new journey with you!

Have a happy and blessed December!🙌🎄✨

National Nutrition Week: Feel good with food

To ensure that you and your family eat healthy food, it takes a bit of extra planning and preparation.

🍉🥭 Choose a variety of affordable and seasonal foods. Set up a meal plan for the week and use a shopping list to help keep to your plan.

🍲🥘Be mindful of your food preparation methods - it has just a big effect on the quality on your plate as the food itself. Limit extra oil, cream, butter, sugar and salt.

🍽️ Stick to moderate portion sizes and avoid overeating.

🍴🥛🥗🌮Have regular meals and/ or healthy snacks throughout the day to prevent overeating due to extreme hunger in the evenings.

It's National Nutrition Week! The theme for this year is: Feel good with food.

Here are a few tips to save money when you buy and prepare meals for your family:

💰 Look out for special offers and discounts and make sure about expiry dates.

❄️🥦🍏🥕Dry and frozen foods can be bought in bulk. Make sure you have enough storage space, especially when buying fresh food and check the expiry dates.

🍉🥭🫐 Buy seasonal foods.

🥛"Growing up" formula is not essential for non-breastfed children. Full cream milk is safe to use from 12 months of age.

🫙🍠Pureed and mashed food can be made at home for your baby. Limit ready-to-eat baby food as it's more costly.

💵🛒 Don't buy expensive food thinking that it's healthy as it may have low nutritional value.

Brain health is important for a range of reasons. Not only for current cognitive function but also for preventing neurological damage and function loss in the future.

- Staying in the dark too much. Ensure you don’t spend too much time in dark areas and prioritize adequate sun exposure (about 15 to 20 minutes at least per day) for healthy vitamin D levels and an improved mood.

- Social isolation. Regular social interaction is necessary to help prevent a decline in brain health and decrease your risk of Alzheimer’s disease.

- Consuming too much sugar. With a diet high in refined sugar and other junk foods, one’s ability for improved memory, learning, and mental health declines.

- Poor sleeping habits. A healthy bedtime routine with limited stimulants electronic exposure before bedtime and adequate hours of sleep help to prevent different forms of dementia.

- Sitting too long. Inadequate physical activity has a direct effect on one’s risk for dementia, elevated blood pressure, diabetes, and heart disease. Aim for 150 minutes of moderate exercise every week.

- Too much screen time. Attention span and mental reserves are compromised when one is exposed to too much screen time. Your ability to focus is also limited.

When last did you include these foods? They are all high in protective nutrients and great foods to include in your diet on a regular basis:

- Eggplant/ brinjals
- Beetroot
- Brussel’s sprouts
