What is Disc Degeneration or Degenerative Disc Disease?

A friendlier term for this condition is ‘aging’ which is a result of natural wear-and-tear.

Spinal discs are tough, fibrous structures with a jelly-like center that are found between the vertebrae. They act as shock absorbers, supporting and cushioning the spine during movement. Discs naturally change with use and age, but that doesn't always result in pain.

Pain can occur when;
(1) the soft core protrudes (bulges & herniates) and irritates surrounding structures.
(2) degenerative changes caused by wear-and-tear and the aging process cause Spinal Osteoarthritis. This is where the cartilage wears down, the discs dehydrate and sometimes bony spurs form.
(3) Your discs naturally lose some hydration over time and get thinner and don’t provide as much shock absorption as they used to. This can contribute to overall instability and aging of the spine.

Degeneration of the discs cannot be reversed but the pain and accompanying symptoms can be prevented and managed via a rehabilitative exercise program which focuses on the surrounding supporting structures.

What is the cause of my lower back pain?

Most lower back pain (LBP) is due to a suboptimal relationship between the structures of the back and how they fit and function.


Meaning that either the vertebrae, intervertebral discs, surrounding and supporting muscles, nerves (or a combination of them) may behave in a negative manner or encroach on spaces that they shouldn’t. This affects the movement of the spine and the pressure on its surrounding structures.
