Universitas Academic Hospital Unveils State-of-the-Art Digital PET/CT Scanner
Universitas Academic Hospital (UAH) has reached another important milestone in advancing specialised healthcare services with the official launch of its Digital PET/CT Scanner at the Nuclear Medicine Department.
The unveiling ceremony, held at Universitas Academic Hospital Annex on 26 February 2026, marked the introduction of one of the most advanced diagnostic imaging technologies available in modern medicine.
The Digital PET/CT scanner combines positron emission tomography (PET) and computed tomography (CT), enabling clinicians to visualise both the anatomical structure of the body and its physiological processes with remarkable accuracy.
This powerful combination enhances the early detection, diagnosis, and monitoring of diseases, particularly in fields such as oncology, cardiology, and neurology.
Speaking at the launch, Mr Ernest Mohlahlo, Head of Department: Free State Department of Health, emphasised the importance of the investment for the province.
“The launch of the Digital PET/CT scanner is one of the achievements that we must pride ourselves on as the province of the Free State. We see this machine as a major investment by the Free State Department of Health, and ultimately the greatest beneficiaries of this investment will be our patients,” said Mohlahlo.
He further highlighted the role the technology will play in strengthening medical training and specialised healthcare services.
“This technology will also provide a conducive learning environment for our medical registrars, allowing them to train in a technologically advanced setting and derive greater opportunities from their learning,” he said.
The HOD added that the new scanner will have a broader regional impact beyond the province.
“When we consider our catchment area, we are not only servicing the people of the Free State. We are also providing services to patients from Lesotho, the Northern Cape, and the Eastern Cape. This technology will change the lives of many of our people,” Mohlahlo said happily.
The addition of the Digital PET/CT scanner strengthens the hospital’s role as a tertiary referral centre, supporting multidisciplinary clinical teams and improving access to specialised diagnostic services for communities across the region.
This milestone reflects the hospital’s continued commitment to innovation, clinical excellence, and patient-centred care.
