Science.... a God given structure to learn from.
This morning, I was reading a scientific paper on the anatomy of the hypothalamus and pituitary and how they communicate. Between them sits a small brain region that lies outside the blood–brain barrier and serves as a primary link between the brain and the endocrine system. It’s called the median eminence.
The name median eminence is very literal and comes from its anatomy:
“Median” = it sits along the midline of the brain
“Eminence” = a slight elevation or prominence of tissue
So, the term simply describes what early anatomists saw: a small, raised structure in the middle at the base of the hypothalamus. It wasn’t named for its function (which we now know is quite sophisticated), but for its shape and location (a common approach in early neuroanatomy).
It may be tiny, but it plays a big role. It’s one of the places where your body and brain are in constant dialogue, where signals about light, food, stress, and environment are translated into hormones. You don’t need to target this part of the brain directly, but you can support it by improving the signals you send it every day.
A few places to start:
• Get natural light within the first hour of waking
• Keep your sleep and wake times as consistent as possible
• Build meals with protein, healthy fats, and color to stabilize blood sugar
• Take a closer look at daily exposures (plastics, fragrances, personal care)
• Create small moments of pause to shift out of constant stress mode
These may seem simple, but they are powerful. Your brain is always listening. And the quality of those signals shapes how your hormones respond. There is always an opportunity to come back into better alignment.
