Early stages of Diabetic Retinopathy often present no noticeable symptoms.

As the condition progresses, patients may experience blurred or fluctuating vision, dark spots, or difficulty seeing at night. It is essential for individuals with diabetes to have regular eye examinations to detect any early changes.

November is Diabetes Awareness Month

At Pasteur Optometrists, we are joining the global effort to raise awareness about the impact of diabetes on eye health. Many people do not realise that diabetes can affect more than just blood sugar levels. It can also cause serious eye complications such as diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma, and cataracts.

These conditions often develop gradually and may not show early warning signs, which is why regular eye exams are essential for anyone living with diabetes. Early detection allows us to identify even the smallest changes and provide the right care before lasting damage occurs.

If signs of diabetic eye disease or visual symptoms are detected during your examination, we will refer you to an ophthalmologist for further assessment and treatment. Working together ensures that you receive the best possible care for your eyes.

If you or someone you love is living with diabetes, make sure to include an eye exam in your health routine. A simple check up can make all the difference in protecting your vision. Contact us at 079 514 3669 to book your appointment.

Your vision matters. Let us help you keep it clear and healthy.

Patient Story: Tebatso Moepi’s Journey to Clearer Vision

Meet Tebatso Moepi, an honours student at the University of the Free State whose life has been transformed through the care and expertise of Optometrist Dina Bornman at Pasteur Optometrists.

Tebatso was diagnosed with keratoconus in 2022 after years of struggling to see clearly, even when sitting right in front of the classroom board. Spectacles helped a little, but his vision continued to decline, making studying and everyday life more difficult. After undergoing a corneal crosslinking procedure to slow the condition, Tebatso turned to Pasteur Optometrists in search of a better solution.

That is where he met Dina, who introduced him to scleral contact lenses. The process took time and patience, especially when learning how to insert and remove the lenses, but Tebatso never gave up. With Dina’s support, he adapted quickly and the results were life changing.

For the first time in years, Tebatso could see faces clearly, read comfortably, and study without strain. His confidence grew, and he is now planning to get his driver’s licence, something that once felt impossible.

At Pasteur Optometrists, stories like Tebatso’s remind us why we do what we do. Clear vision truly changes lives, and we are proud to have been part of his journey.

Myopia, also known as nearsightedness, is one of the fastest growing vision problems among children around the world. It develops when the eyes grow too long, causing distant objects to appear blurry. Increased screen time, reduced outdoor activity, and genetics all play a role in more children needing glasses at an early age.

At Pasteur Optometrists, we are passionate about protecting children’s vision. That is why we offer the MiYOSMART lens from HOYA, an award winning innovation developed in partnership with the Hong Kong Polytechnic University. Unlike ordinary lenses, MiYOSMART uses advanced myopic defocus technology to correct vision while helping to slow the progression of myopia. It is safe, noninvasive, and clinically proven to make a lasting difference in a child’s eye health.

Clear vision today means brighter futures tomorrow. Every child deserves the chance to see their world clearly.

Our optometrist, Dina Bornman, has had a very productive week.

She started her week in Cape Town at the Eyespace Workshop, where she gained valuable insights to further enhance the care she provides to her contact lens patients. While there, she also had the opportunity to connect with some of the leading names in the field: Lachlan Hoy, Managing Director of EyeSpace Australia, Charl Laas, Director of EyeSpace New Zealand, and Mariska van Zyl from EyeSpace South Africa, who can all be seen in the photo below.

On 23 October, Dina travelled to Johannesburg to attend the ContactConnect 2025 Contact Lens Conference, hosted by the Contact Lens Society of South Africa. This annual event brings together leading specialists from around the world to share the latest advances in contact lens technology, myopia management and clinical innovation. It provides optometrists with the opportunity to exchange ideas, connect with industry leaders and explore new ways to deliver even better patient care.

At Pasteur Optometrists, we believe that exceptional eye care comes from continuous learning and professional growth. Our optometrists are committed to staying informed and advancing their knowledge so that every patient receives the highest standard of care.

Tonometry: Why a puff of air can save your vision!

When you come in for an eye test at Pasteur Optometrists, you might notice we do a quick puff of air to measure the pressure inside your eyes. That’s called tonometry.

It’s a small test that can make a big difference!

Tonometry helps us detect early signs of glaucoma, a condition that can cause permanent vision loss if not caught in time. The tricky part is that glaucoma often has no symptoms in its early stages, which is why routine eye pressure checks are so important, even if your vision feels perfectly fine.

Regular eye exams with tonometry ensure we catch any changes early so we can protect your sight for years to come. We also do referrals to an ophthalmologist when we have concerns about your eye pressure to ensure that you get the best possible outcome as one of our valued patients.

Prevention truly is better than cure. You can contact us at 079 514 3669 to book your comprehensive eye test with tonometry.

Delivering efficient, professional services to our patients

Pasteur Optometrists opened its doors in November 2001 in the Pasteur Medical Centre, Hospital Park, Bloemfontein. Neels Bornman, our Optometrist, has been delivering efficient, professional services to our patients since day one.

Our dedicated team strives to ensure that our patients receive only the best Optometric care available. As such we have invested in several technologies to be on the cutting edge of Optometric innovation, such as Spectrum Eye Care software used during eye examinations and the Optikam Measurement System that takes digital measurements of your new frame, as to ensure the most accurate placement of your new spectacle lenses in your chosen frame.

Through our close proximity to the Ophthalmologists of the Horizon Eye Care Centre, we strive to offer only the best Optometric care available, completely independent of the Ophthalmologists.
