‼️BREAKING‼️

Health Minister Zweli Mkhize announces temporary suspension of rollout of the Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine pending an investigation into blood clots link in the US.

There have been six incidents reported in the US (out of more than 6 million!) and the link to the vaccine has not been confirmed. The FDA and CDC have recommended a pause.

The Minister says there have been no reports of blood clots in study in South Africa. Almost 290 000 people have received the J&J shot here.

Minister Mkhize says it is precautionary, he doesn’t anticipate it to be a permanent stop and will be a few days.

He says it won’t affect the plans to roll out the Pfizer vaccine.

Comment: We are suspending a rollout that hasn’t started yet. But we do have the final batch of J&J as part of the Sisonke study that just arrived in SA that will now be put on hold. We don’t know when the first commercial batch is coming so this could be resolved before then.

Nelson Mandela Bay: Curfew from 10pm to 4am. Does not apply to essential workers. Alcohol sale restricted to 10am to 6pm Monday to Thursday. Alcohol consumption in public strictly forbidden. Religious gatherings limited to 100 indoor, 250 outdoor. No post funeral gatherings.

Last week the country moved to Level 1, which has allowed for greater economic and social activity, however, the Department of Health is urging people to remain vigilant and not let their guard down. Gauteng has already seen a 6% increase in active COVID-19 cases in the space of just one week.

Basic protocols must still be followed:
- Wear a mask
- Physical distancing
- Wash and sanitise hands

Make sure you do not run out of hand wash and sanitiser.
