🌍 World Obesity Day 2026

BMI has long been used to define obesity - but it doesn’t capture the full clinical picture.

The latest Lancet Diabetes & Endocrinology Commission recommends moving beyond weight alone to assess excess body fat, organ function, and impact on daily life.

It distinguishes between:

🔹 Preclinical obesity – excess body fat with increased health risk, but no current organ dysfunction.
🔹 Clinical obesity – a chronic disease where excess body fat is causing organ dysfunction and/or functional limitation.

This approach reduces both over- and under-diagnosis and supports more precise, individualised management.

A more accurate definition allows for better care. As dietitians, we advocate for evidence-based, clinically meaningful approaches - not just numbers on a scale.
