Christelle Koekemoer from Wiggly Education and Anette Nel (Registered counsellor at Belvedere School) presented at Jiswa School on the SIAS process (Screening, Identification, Assessment and Support) and the development of Individual Support Plans (ISP’s).

💡 The session focused on empowering educators and support teams with practical knowledge and tools to better understand learners’ diverse needs and implement meaningful support strategies in the classroom.

When a child looks “defiant”, it’s often their nervous system reacting – not a choice to misbehave.

➡️Fight may look like lashing out or shouting.
➡️Flight may look like running away or avoiding.
➡️Freeze may look like shutting down or going silent.
➡️Fawn may look like people-pleasing or agreeing just to feel safe.

What looks like defiance is usually a survival response. When we reframe behaviour through this lens, we shift from punishment to support.
