What Should an emergency controller do in a case of fire?

1. Instruct the switchboard to call the Fire Department.
2. Mobilize the "Emergency Action Commitee and Activate the Emergency Control Centre.
3. Place Evacuation wardens on standby ( In code, if possible).
4. Assess the situation and order full or partial evacuation if possible. (All floors above the fire and at least one floor below). Evacuation should be ordered in code.
5. Ensure that lifts are brought to groumd to prevent use.
7. Assemble building plans and any other information that may be of value to the fire Department. (Location of Hydrants, etc.)
8. If possible, order that areas close to hydrants are cleared as wellas access routes to the affected area.

In a couple of days you’ll face the increased risk of a R2,700,000 penalty for non-compliance in terms of the Employment Equity Act. That’s because our President has signed January 2014’s EE Amendment Act into power and it becomes fully effective on Friday 01 August 2014.

That means you need to comply with all the new revisions THIS year!

For example: ALL designated employers are required to report annually from now on, in terms of the progress they’ve made against their EE Plans. There’s no more concessions for being a small company or a large company. The new Act says that if you’re a designated employer, you must report every single year, starting this year in 2014.

There are also more onerous requirements for you to prove that you are taking specific actions to improve EE in your company.
