Medical surveillance (examinations) determines whether employees are fit for work and if they are negatively affected by exposures at work. It is a comprehensive medical screening programme in compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act No 85, 1993, the Construction Regulations and the Mines Health and Safety Act No 29, 1996 and will consist of the following elements:

Understanding of the current job specifications to ensure the employee is fit for the job. History of the employee: Occupational, medical and lifestyle. Full medical examination: Including urine test, height, weight, blood pressure and head to toe examination. Visual screening – Initial a snellen test is done including a colour test. Other test will be done according job specification i.e. Lung function testing as per ATS/ERS Standards. Audiometric testing (Hearing tests) as per regulation 171 of the SABS Standard requirements. Unfit employees will be referred to the required medical facilities and or specialist. All referrals will be coordinated and monitored. Reporting and Certificate
Detailed summary report will be provided
Medical certificate of fitness valid for one year signed off by Occupational Medical Practitioner will be provided for each employee. Maintenance of medical records
Records will be kept safe according to legal requirements.
