The Teddy Bear Foundation South Africa

The Teddy Bear Foundation South Africa Where children go on their Journey to Healing🧸 TBF is closely monitored by the board of directors who are all from civil society.

The Teddy Bear Clinic for Abused Children now trading as Teddy Bear Foundation (TBF) originated in 1986 in response to an urgent need for medical examinations for sexually abused children. From there it has grown into a fully fledged service for abused children which includes: Forensic medical examinations, forensic assessments, counseling, psychological testing and more recently a diversion progr

amme for youth sexual offenders. Professor Lorna Jacklin a specialist pediatrician based at the Johannesburg General Hospital the chairman of the board of directors formed part of the inception of the TBF. The financial department is audited every year by a well known and reputable auditing firm. In South Africa, child abuse is and has been an ongoing problem. As an NGO, our concern is not only to support children and families affected by abuse but also to promote: “CHILD ABUSE NO MORE”. We historically have supported the abused child through the Criminal Justice System to ensure psychological healing takes place and the child is able to fulfill their place as a valuable member in society without the scarring that may perpetuate child abuse in the future. We have done this through forensic medical examinations, supportive therapy, forensic evaluations, psychological testing and a court preparation programme for children and parents, for cases that go to court. We offer a diversion programme in partnership with the courts for young sex offenders. This programme is designed to redirect the child offender away from the criminal justice system in order to rehabilitate the child into more constructive behaviours. We hereby prevent the child from developing into an adult offender which in turn will help us achieve our aim of “Child Abuse no more”

Today marked a significant step in our commitment to culturally sensitive and relevant care. The Teddy Bear Foundation was honoured to host Professor Zibonele Zimba from the University of Johannesburg for an insightful training session on 'Indigenisation and Decolonisation Theories in Social Work Practice'.

We were proud to bring together our dedicated social workers, volunteers, and interns from all branches for this crucial learning experience. We are grateful for embedding these vital principles into the heart of our work to better serve our communities.

This is not tradition. This is trauma.

We, at the Teddy Bear Foundation, stand vehemently against the criminal practice of "Ukuthwala", which is the abduction of girls and young women to force them and their families into marriage.

Let's be clear: True, consensual cultural practices honour women. Ukuthwala, as it is practiced today, is a violent crime that robs children of their childhood, their education, their safety, and their right to choose their own future.

This is what we are fighting:
* Child Abuse: Many victims are underage girls.
* Gender-Based Violence: It is a brutal act of power and control.
* R**e: These abductions often lead to s*xual assault.
* Human Rights Violation: It denies dignity, freedom, and choice.

is NOT a cultural excuse for kidnapping and r**e.

We call on our communities to:
* Protect our girls.
* Report these crimes to the police immediately.
* Reject any negotiation with kidnappers.
* Educate others that this is a punishable crime.

Silence is complicity. Share this post to break the silence. Together, we can end this practice and protect South Africa's children.

A special appeal from Teddy Bear Foundation - Krugersdorp Branch

To help us give hundreds of donated teddy bears a fresh start, we are in desperate need of a washing machine. A new or second-hand washing machine would allow us to efficiently clean and sanitize every bear before they are gifted to children in trauma and need. Can you help us continue to deliver comfort?

Please message us if you can donate or share this post to help us find one!

International Youth Day 2025
Theme: Local Youth Actions for the SDGs and Beyond

Young people aren’t just the leaders of tomorrow, they are the changemakers of today.
This year’s International Youth Day celebrates the power of youth to turn big global goals into real change in their own communities.

From tackling inequality to protecting our planet, over 65% of the UN Sustainable Development Goals depend on local action, and that is where youth shine. With creativity, insight, and deep community connections, they bridge the gap between policy and reality.

Let us invest in spaces where young voices are heard, ideas are nurtured, and change is made possible. Together, we can build a more inclusive, sustainable, and hopeful future.

"What was the point of all this?"
A survivor’s fight for justice after 20 years of silence

Alice* was 15 years old when a teacher at her Cape Town high school groomed her and s*xually abused her. For decades, she buried the trauma, until 2023, when a classmate’s story triggered her own memories.

She bravely reported the abuse, but both cases against her alleged rapists were dismissed, despite witness statements and evidence.

“All I wanted was to move on… Now I am left asking: What was the point?”

Dr. Shaheda Omar of the Teddy Bear Foundation explains why so many survivors delay disclosure:
🔸 Grooming manipulates victims into not recognizing abuse at the time.
🔸 Trauma leads to repressed memories, sometimes surfacing years later.
🔸 Under-resourced courts and insensitive systems fail survivors seeking justice.

South Africa has no time limit for reporting s*xual crimes but without proper support, investigations often collapse. We must demand better.

Share to amplify Alice’s story. Survivors deserve to be heard and believed.

Name changed for privacy

In South Africa, there is no statute of limitations for certain s*xual assault cases.

Justice needed for Eldorado Park toddlers

The Teddy Bear Foundation is deeply disturbed by the horrific abuse case emerging from Eldorado Park, where two innocent children, a 2-year-old boy and his 4-year-old sister, suffered unimaginable cruelty at the hands of their own parents.

CASE FACTS:
* The 4-year-old girl remains hospitalized in critical condition after severe repeated assault
* Her 2-year-old brother suffered alleged s*xual and physical abuse
* Both parents arrested for attempted murder and defeating justice
* The father is set to return to court on 12 August for a formal bail application.

OUR STATEMENT:
"When caregivers become tormentors, society must become the protector. We demand maximum consequences for these unspeakable acts and will support these children through their long healing journey."
Teddy Bear Foundation

HOW TO HELP:
Report suspected abuse immediately:
- Childline SA: 116 (free)
- SAPS Emergency: 10111

We will share verified court developments via our stories. The public is urged to:
* Avoid speculation that could harm legal proceedings
* Channel outrage into supporting child protection systems

[UPDATE] Police can confirm that the 4-year-old child has died in hospital. The case docket has been changed to murder and a charge of r**e has been added.

On Wednesday, 06 August 2025, police responded to a complaint of the father who was physically abusing his child in Eldorado Park. On arrival at the scene, they were pointed a backyard shack that was closed. Upon entering, police found a man with a little boy and a little girl. They noticed that the girl who was sleeping in the bed had head injuries, bruises and swollen eye. The man who introduced himself as the father of the children could not give a clear explanation about what happened to the girl.

The police arrested the father and rushed the girl to a nearby medical care centre for treatment.
