The Teddy Bear Foundation South Africa

The Teddy Bear Foundation South Africa Where children go on their Journey to Healing🧸 TBF is closely monitored by the board of directors who are all from civil society.

The Teddy Bear Clinic for Abused Children now trading as Teddy Bear Foundation (TBF) originated in 1986 in response to an urgent need for medical examinations for sexually abused children. From there it has grown into a fully fledged service for abused children which includes: Forensic medical examinations, forensic assessments, counseling, psychological testing and more recently a diversion programme for youth sexual offenders. Professor Lorna Jacklin a specialist pediatrician based at the Johannesburg General Hospital the chairman of the board of directors formed part of the inception of the TBF. The financial department is audited every year by a well known and reputable auditing firm. In South Africa, child abuse is and has been an ongoing problem. As an NGO, our concern is not only to support children and families affected by abuse but also to promote: “CHILD ABUSE NO MORE”. We historically have supported the abused child through the Criminal Justice System to ensure psychological healing takes place and the child is able to fulfill their place as a valuable member in society without the scarring that may perpetuate child abuse in the future. We have done this through forensic medical examinations, supportive therapy, forensic evaluations, psychological testing and a court preparation programme for children and parents, for cases that go to court. We offer a diversion programme in partnership with the courts for young sex offenders. This programme is designed to redirect the child offender away from the criminal justice system in order to rehabilitate the child into more constructive behaviours. We hereby prevent the child from developing into an adult offender which in turn will help us achieve our aim of “Child Abuse no more”

A Landmark for Justice, A Testament to a Child's Courage

The recent case in George, which resulted in a life sentence for a child ra**st, is one of profound contradiction. The crime committed against a 4-year-old girl is unspeakably disturbing, and our primary feeling is one of heartbreak.

Yet, within this tragedy, we must acknowledge a critical step forward for child justice in South Africa. This case marks the first time a 4-year-old has successfully testified in a South African r**e case.

Dr. Shaheda Omar, our Director at the Teddy Bear Foundation, emphasized that this successful testimony was made possible by a specialized, child-centric approach. "This case demonstrates that it is entirely possible for a child to give coherent and compelling evidence when we use expert intermediaries to support them in a safe space. This process allows the child to tell the whole truth of what happened, while protecting them from the secondary trauma of a harsh cross-examination," she stated.

This landmark victory is a testament to the child's immense bravery, but also to a legal system that is learning to adapt. It proves that with the right, trauma-informed protocols, the voices of our very youngest and most vulnerable victims can be heard and can secure justice.

This ruling is not a celebration of the event, but a solemn acknowledgment that the system can work to protect children. It is a hard-won victory for justice that gives hope for the protection of future victims.

Our work continues to develop and advocate for these trauma-informed practices to protect every child.

A disturbing case in Diepkloof, Soweto, highlights the critical need for community vigilance. The family of a 12-year-old boy is seeking justice after he was allegedly r**ed by a 31-year-old man.

The Grade 6 pupil is among a group of young boys who were allegedly targeted by the same man after school. The suspect was arrested on September 6th but has since been released from custody, causing immense anxiety for the families.

The boy’s father became concerned by a change in his son's behaviour. After persistent questioning, the child confessed that an adult male would drag them to his home, show them a gun, and threaten to shoot them if they spoke up.

Other tenants in the yard confirmed that different groups of boys regularly visited the man's home.

The Gauteng Education Department has suspended a fellow pupil who allegedly acted as a recruiter. The Teddy Bear Foundation has been brought on board to provide crucial support to the young victims.

This is a stark reminder of our collective duty to ensure the safety of our children. If you see something, say something.

It is with profound sadness that the Teddy Bear Foundation mourns the passing of Dr. Sally Röthemeyer.

A true leader and mentor, Dr. Sally was a cornerstone of the Victim Support Unit at the Fairland CPF for many years. Last week, our Diversion Program Officer, Eric Singo, was in the Elsburg Community conducting a vital outreach session on Gender-Based Violence (GBV).

We are looking back at this impactful event where, as part of our commitment to supporting women's health and dignity, we distributed sanitary care packs to the women who attended the awareness talk. Addressing GBV requires a multi-faceted approach, and ensuring access to essential hygiene products is a key part of that effort.

Thank you once again to the Elsburg community for your powerful engagement.

The recent news from a Cape Town primary school is heartbreaking and complex. Our Clinical Director, Dr. Shaheda Omar, provides essential expert context on the bigger picture: child protection and trauma.

She stresses that the trauma of s*xual assault affects all children involved, both the alleged victim and the child accused. Both need long-term psychosocial support.

In such cases, South Africa's Child Justice Act prioritises restorative justice for children under 12. This means a focus on counselling, mediation, and family support, aiming to heal rather than further traumatise.

At Teddy Bear Foundation, we believe in approaches that protect the well-being of every child. This difficult story underscores why our work is so vital.

🎉 Happy National Heritage Day! 🎉

Today, we celebrate the beautiful tapestry of cultures, languages, and traditions that make up our nation. At the Teddy Bear Foundation, we see this diversity every day in the children we serve.

While our heritage may be different, the need for love, comfort, and safety is a language every child understands. A teddy bear might be a small gift, but it represents a big truth: that every child, no matter their background, deserves to feel protected and cherished.

This Heritage Day, let us honour our past by building a kinder future for South Africa's children.

Send us your stories of what you did this year to celebrate Heritage Day...

Tragedy has struck multiple Gauteng schools.

A Grade 8 learner from Vlakfontein collapsed and died, a Grade 9 learner in Daveyton is suspected to have died by su***de, and 8 boys at a Diepkloof primary school were allegedly r**ed.

The Education Department is deploying psychosocial support. The Teddy Bear Foundation has been brought on board to assist with the process to make sure that the learners are attended to.

"This incident is a reminder of the importance of the collective duty to ensure the safety of our children. We call upon parents to work very closely with us and make sure that our children are safe at all times." says Gauteng Education Dpt. MEC, Mr. Matome Chiloane
