That’s called traction alopecia.
It happens when hair is under constant tension for a long time—tight braids, cornrows, weaves, ponytails, or extensions pulling on the same areas, especially the front hairline and temples.
A few key signs:
Thinning or loss along the edges/hairline
Small broken hairs at the front (“fringe sign”)
Smooth or shiny scalp if it’s been going on a long time
Can become permanent if the pulling continues for years
