The WHO defines mental health as a state of well-being in which an individual realizes his or her own capabilities, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to his or her community. It is therefore clearly much more than just the absence of mental illness but affects us right through our life from childhood, through adolescence, all the way up until old age in our relationships with others, the choices we make and how we deal with stress.
Physical activity serves as an excellent strategy to deal with stress and improve your mental health since it can help to modify the changes stress brings about in our nervous system and help us to better regulate the responses of our nervous system while reducing the risk of non-communicable diseases. Furthermore, chemicals called endorphins are released by your body while you exercise. Once released, the endorphins interact with receptors in the brain where they have a variety of reactions including a reduced pain perception and an overall feeling of positivity.

Choose exercises you enjoy and focus on the benefits it brings about while setting realistic goals and identifying barriers to participation and ways to overcome those barriers.

The theme this year for Parkinson's Awareness Week is Mental Health.
Up to 50% of people with Parkinson’s will suffer from Anxiety or Depression at some point during their illness.
Living with Anxiety or Depression with Parkinson’s will worsen symptoms such as tremor, stiffness, sleep problems and pain and much more. When left untreated, Anxiety and Depression reduces quality of life.
Biokineticists assist patients with Parkinson's with physical functioning which also boosts mood.
