The trilled /r/ sound requires precise, rapid movement of the tongue tip just behind the upper front teeth, along with just the right amount of airflow — too much or too little, and the tongue won’t vibrate. Because it's so tricky, some children avoid attempting it altogether, often substituting sounds like /l/ or /w/, which can lead to reinforced incorrect speech patterns.

In Afrikaans and some South African languages, the trilled /r/ is more expected and socially reinforced. However, it is not always acquired early, and variations are often considered acceptable unless speech intelligibility is affected.
