As this year draws to an end, my heart is filled with gratitude for every client who has trusted me with their stories, their pain and their healing. Thank you for allowing me to walk besides you and to hold space for you. Your commitment towards your healing and growth continues to inspire me. Here’s to rest, renewal, and returning with a full cup.

Growing up in an African community, I was raised to believe that rest equated to laziness, while constant work equated to productivity; resilience; and being “hard-working.” Rest was something you earned, not something you were allowed to prioritise.

Through my personal experiences of evolving and especially through my journey as a psychologist, I’ve learned to unlearn those old narratives. I started understanding that rest is not optional but necessary to prevent burnout as well as to assist me in showing up with intention for my clientele.

In as much as healing is our responsibility, so is resting. May we learn to normalise rest as much as we normalise other responsibilities.

Gift exchange with colleagues!

I’m grateful to have moments such as these where we can simply be. Stepping out of our roles as therapists to unwind, laugh, connect with our inner child, and just enjoy each other’s presence is truly fulfilling . These moments fill my cup, ground me, and make the journey even sweeter.

I am grateful to have been part of the 2nd South African Mental Health Conference, hosted by the FPD . Over two days, experts; advocates; and community leaders came together to share insights, strengthen conversations, and move our mental health systems from evidence to action.

As a psychologist with a special interest in mental health advocacy, I found the discussions both transformative and deeply affirming, a reminder of how collective effort and shared learning can drive real change in the mental health landscape.
