What I am talking about so passionately?

Being a good, caring and informed doctor to all people with contraceptive needs. It saves lives, prevents serious disease and complications, improves agency and socioeconomic status. It’s not a luxury, it is a right.

Weird how one pic, taken in my practice on a random Friday, can tell my story so accurately:

PROTEA:
I once was married to a Protea cricket player for ten years. I have now been married to Johann for ten years. He proposed with a huge bunch of proteas and we got married with proteas everywhere. I walk a few minutes from my home where they grow abundantly in their natural habitat. The only habitat in the world where they do. Where they belong. Free and wild and breathtakingly beautiful.

UTERUS
I had ten fertility treatments, one miscarriage, two miracle babies and a hysterectomy. At midnight on my 40th birthday I was admitted to hospital because I was bleeding so severely and I lost my uterus shortly after that. Despite desperately desiring another baby.
..and my day job happens to to hinge pretty pertinently on things revolving around these organs. The hormones, the pleasure and the pain they produce. I love dealing with them and the people they belong to.

Here they stand in juxtaposition and also in harmony. The pain and the pleasure. The hurt and the healing. The grace and the gratitude.

Serious about S*xual Health...

I had all the intentions to post about women's health every day during women's month in August.

Just like I had the intention to get up at 4am every morning, take my NAD, NAC, creatine, whey protein, collagen, berries, nuts and enough "good oils" every day. And of course exercise every day. All while making sure my kids get their five a day, know how loved they are, do try heir homework, make it to all their activities and make my husband not feel like my career is the only one that matters in our household.

I didn't.

But it doesn't mean I am not even more passionate about it than ever before. I am leaving for Porto today, where we will host the first ever World S*xual Health Assembly. A powerful collaboration between all the leaders in S*xual Health and Rights to ensure a future where there is S*xual Health, Rights and Justice for all. Together, we can do great things! If you pray or send light, please do so. We need grace and wisdom to prioritise the right things.

Dreams do come true!

I have been dreaming of seeing Uluru for decades. I came close to giving up on it - it is not exactly on-route to anywhere (right in the middle of the Australian outback!)

What I got there was bewilderingly beautiful but also surprisingly meaningful.

That is the kind of dream that is worth chasing for me - the kind that is both beautiful and meaningful. It takes spades full of privilege, favour and sacrifice to get there. Some you can control, some you can’t, but it is worth trying!

I have deep gratitude that this one came true and exceeded my expectations! 🙏🏻

Credibility is everything in our profession!

Liked it when the mirror at my daughter’s acrobatics competition told me that I looked credible 🤣🤭🤓

Check your “s*xologist’s” credibility - there are some pretty dodgy ones out there!

Credibility comes with proper primary qualifications (most importantly!) , registration, further training in s*xual health from credible institutions, multidisciplinary team membership and working under continuous supervision. If something is lacking, credibility is questionable.
