🌿 Folic Acid in Pregnancy & Beyond 🌿

🌿 Folic acid is essential in early pregnancy to prevent brain and spine defects, as well as throughout pregnancy to support the growing baby.

🌿 The neural tube is formed before most women even know they are pregnant - if you are planning a pregnancy, it is important to start ASAP. Ideally we aim for supplementation 12 weeks for conceiving.

🌿 There are benefits outside of pregnancy in women with anaemia or heavy bleeding - ensure that any iron supplementation for these conditions is accompanied by folic acid.

3 Gentle Reminders for Every Woman

💗 Love Yourself Enough to Check:
Do regular self-checks to get to know your body.

Self breast examinations are the number 1 way to detect early changes, especially in young women before they start mammogram screenings

🩺 Trust Your Doctor:
A breast examination is part of your routine check-up

Ask your doctor to teach the correct technique for your own checks

📸 Prioritise Your Screenings:
Mammograms every 2nd year from the age of 40

🌸 Because early detection gives us more time, more options, and more hope. 🌸

🌸 6 Reasons Young Women Should See a Gynae (Even if She’s Healthy).

Young women should start their women's healthcare journey from the time they become sexually active or from the age of 25.

1️⃣ Builds body confidence early.

Understanding how her body works helps her feel informed, empowered, and at ease.

2️⃣ Creates a safe, supportive space.

She can ask anything, no judgement, no awkwardness, just honest, age-appropriate guidance.

3️⃣ Normalises health checkups.

Just like a dentist or GP visit, this sets the tone for caring about her wellbeing long-term.

4️⃣ Helps spot small issues early.

Irregular cycles, period pain, or hormonal changes? We can support her before they become bigger concerns.

5️⃣ Guidelines all recommend that cervical cancer screening starts this early.

Your first pap smear is a milestone that can feel scary, finding a trusted provider to guide through this experience sets the tone for your future gynaecological care.

6️⃣ Gives you trusted knowledge - Not social media myths.

You'll walk away with real, accurate info about your body, your cycle, and what’s normal
for you.

💬 A first gynae visit isn’t scary, it’s empowering.

Let’s start the journey with care and confidence.

Every scan tells a story about your health, your body, your next step.

Ultrasound isn’t just about capturing an image; it’s about using precise, evidence-based insight to support your unique journey, whether you’re here for a routine check-up, fertility planning, or reassurance in pregnancy.

In my rooms, technology and empathy work hand in hand.

You’re not just a patient, you’re a person, and your concerns deserve to be seen, heard, and understood.

Is this the start of menopause?

It’s a question I hear often, sometimes whispered, sometimes asked in frustration, sometimes unsure.

And the truth is, menopause isn’t one big switch, it’s a gradual transition.

Perimenopause (the lead-up) can begin years before your final period.

Hormones fluctuate. Sleep becomes disrupted. Mood shifts. Periods become irregular. Hot flushes may begin. Libido may change.

These are real, common signs, and they deserve proper attention.

If you’ve noticed changes that don’t feel quite right, it’s worth exploring.

Understanding your body is the first step to feeling empowered through every stage.

I’m here to support you through this next chapter, with personalised care, clinical insight, and genuine compassion.

Book a consult, let’s talk about what’s really going on.

6️⃣ Reasons I Recommend a Pap Smear. Even If You Feel Fine

As a women’s health specialist, I can’t say this enough: prevention is powerful.

A Pap smear is one of the simplest, most effective tools we have to protect your future.

1️⃣ We Catch Changes Early
Cervical cancer doesn’t usually come with warning signs, but a Pap smear can detect abnormal cells before they become dangerous.

2️⃣ We Screen for HPV:
All cervical cancers are linked to HPV. We can now screen for the underlying cause and intervene much earlier than waiting for the abnormal cells. Combined HPV testing with traditional cell-based pap smears is a powerful combination to understand your individual risk.

3️⃣ It Gives You Peace of Mind
One small check, one big exhale. You’ve done something important for yourself.

4️⃣ It’s Preventative, Not Just Reactive
We don’t wait for problems to start. Pap smears help us stay one step ahead.

5️⃣ It’s Quick
A few minutes. A bit of discomfort. A lifetime of benefit.

6️⃣ It’s a Wellness Moment
It’s more than a test, it’s a reminder that you are worth prioritising.

💬 Your health matters, even when nothing feels wrong.

If you’re due (or overdue), this is your gentle reminder. I’m here when you’re ready.

Feeling grateful for the opportunity to present at the Sandton Mediclinic Trauma and Emergency Symposium.

🌸 I had the privilege of speaking to over 100 GPs and specialists on the important topic of Managing Early Pregnancy Complications at the Primary Level.

The goal was to empower GP’s and casualty doctors with the confidence to support women experiencing pain and bleeding in the first trimester and to strengthen collaboration with specialists. 🤍

Thank you to everyone who joined.
