Read full post for a better understanding of the link between chronic stress and immune dysfunction, and how best to approach this critical concern in light of the fears around Covid-19.
The global community has been rocked by a wave of fear and paranoia in response to the Coronavirus. Don’t be swept up in the panic. Instead, employ a rational and positive mindset and focus on what is in your control.
Your health is in your control.
Your attitude is in your control.
There has never been a more appropriate time to filter out the anxious noise of the world around you and turn your attention inwards… with focus on strengthening your own ultimate line of defense- your magnificent immune system.
At Transform Stress Clinic, we employ the incredibly effective Body Stress Release technique to release tension from the body and activate the body’s sophisticated ability to self-heal. We do this not only to successfully address chronic and acute pain, but also to support optimal functioning of bodily systems and processes, including the immune system.
Lance Simpson, Director and Body Stress Release practitioner at Transform Stress Clinic, has a special interest in the relationship between stress and the immune system and has the following to say on the topic of Corona and the importance of maintaining a healthy body and mind:
Every day there seems to be a new barrage of theories, conspiracies, opinions and predictions around the Corona threat. It is not my intent to downplay the threat or the efforts to curb the spread thereof. My concern is that an unnecessary atmosphere of panic and tension is being created due to fear-mongering and it seems that drama has become the new currency for many who seem to relish and encourage anxiety. Fear and misinformation is spreading faster than the virus and based on how people are responding, we seem to have lost faith in the wisdom of our bodies and that in itself is a greater threat to our wellbeing than Covid-19. My advice to family, clients and friends is to socially distance yourself from sensationalism and focus on 3 practical areas that are in your control:
1- Take the necessary precautions and follow the necessary guidelines. Not out of fear, but because they are practical to avoid the spread of the virus into vulnerable sections of the community.
2- Introduce healthy disciplines into your day- Eat well, sleep well and take time to connect with those around you and, most importantly with yourself. This is an excellent opportunity for introspection and reintroducing creativity and passion.
3- Identify the areas of your life that are causing unhealthy levels of stress and assess how these stressors are affecting you physically, mentally and behaviourally. Be cognisant of the fact that long term stress is detrimental to the functioning of your body and has a debilitating impact on your immune system. Addressing stress related fatigue and bodily tension may be the best way to boost your defences, and let me tell you why:
The body’s short-term reaction to stress is the "fight-or-flight" response which activates the sympathetic nervous system and causes a release of adrenaline. Longer-term stress activates the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis which causes cortisol to be released. Cortisol has similar effects to adrenaline in the body, but remains in blood for a longer period of time. Stress significantly suppresses the immune system, shifting the immune response away from the Th1 response that fights viral infections, and towards the Th2 response which is responsible for fighting bacterial infections (and which also causes allergic reactions). Both the main stress hormones- cortisol and adrenaline are also significant immune system modulators, as is the sympathetic nervous system. Long-term stress causes a number of changes within the central nervous system in order to maintain appropriate levels of cortisol. What seems to happen is that the brain reduces its HPA axis activation after enduring prolonged periods of stress. This results in a reduced ability to handle stress and in extreme cases results in illnesses such as chronic fatigue syndrome. As well as providing the body with energy and vitality, the HPA axis also modulates the immune system, autonomic nervous system and digestive system, so a reduced or dysfunctional HPA axis activation will result in abnormal immune system activation, increased inflammation and allergic reactions, IBS symptoms, as well as a reduced tolerance to physical and mental stresses.
