Having reflected on where we are at the moment, do you have any mental health goals this year?
How do you intend to reach it?

Is it to practice more intentional self care?
To learn to manage your anxiety/OCD/psychosis etc?
To follow up more regularly with your clinicians?
Take your medication regularly?

Here are some things I intend to do to maintain my sanity, as far as is possible this 2022.

- being proactive so as to not let my triggers get the best of me.. Eg I know procrastination can cause me anxiety.. So I want to do better in that regard, I.e work on things when I should so that they don't pile up and become a problem.

- be more organised. I'm still figuring out the best approach for this. I'm not much of a fan of planners and diaries πŸ˜…. What do you guys use?

- .. check out my previous post on the benefits of greentherapy. Nature always provides a soothing space for me, an instant mental health reboot when needed.

- Give myself permission to have bad days. Life will have it's ups and downs. A down day is no reason for shame.

- Accessing professional help if needed. I find it useful to see a psychologist when things particularly get fairly hectic.

Sooo, January can be a tricky month for people's mental health. Anxiety, depression, loneliness, identity crisis, financial strain, uncertainty etc can all affect our mind health in one way or the other.

As a way to be our brother & sister's keeper this year, let's kick off with a baseline mental health check.

On a scale of 1 - 10,
with 1 being poor β˜ΉοΈπŸ‘ŽπŸΎ
and
10 being super πŸ˜ŠπŸ‘πŸΎ,
where would you rank yourself?
Are you happy with that score?
Let me know below.

I'd say I'm between a 7.5 & 8/10.
Holding up pretty well, save for some expectations I hope will be met this year which makes for a little anxiety.. At present, I have the tools to adequately manage the anxiety and remain functional.

How can one prevent or reduce the severity of a mental health dip/ breakdown this holiday season?

- perform wellness checks. Regularly audit how you're doing. Identify triggers and put forth solutions to deal with them. Being prepared before a situation happens is best.

- know your personal warning signs. What happens when you're not being okay. Eg. Do you start to isolate yourself when you're depressed? Have you been feeling fatigued? Unable to focus?
Being aware that you're slipping can allow for different interventions before a full blown relapse.

- take good care of your physical health. Keep active. Yes there will be yummy food to be eaten, but also make effort to eat some healthy treats. REST! Holiday periods can be jam packed with activity. Don't forget to make time to rest well.

- stay connected. Reach out to those you trust and enjoy socialising. If you are isolated, consider Journaling

- ensure compliance on medication. Make sure you've filled out your prescription and continue to take them as prescribed, EVEN on vacations.

- speak to a professional if needed. Psychiatrists and psychologists are still available over the holiday season. If you are struggling to cope, do not hesitate to contact one. Emergency hotlines are also available if these avenues don't work.

Why might your mental health take a dip during the holiday Seasons?

Some reasons include:
- feelings of isolation and loneliness as everybody travels to their family
- feelings of dread because of having to associate with certain friends/family who trigger you
- personal disappointment that you may not have achieved the goals set out for the year.
- the pressure of meeting up with work deadlines before the closure for the year OR having to work through the season without adequate rest
- poor adherence to medication eg due to lack of funds to afford it, busy schedules with entertaining guests/socialising.
- where holiday season fall in winter, with less sunlight, some individuals are prone to a worsening of depression (seasonal pattern)
- some conditions are noted to have a spike in relapse in different periods of the year, eg during summer time

How can one prevent or reduce the severity of the breakdown this holiday season?
Let's touch on that tomorrow.

In the meanwhile, have you ever noticed that your mental health takes a dip over the holidays?

Good day 😁.. Hope everyone is well.

As much as my aim is to contribute to good mental health, it's good to realize that part of the human experience is having bad days.

Sometimes despite all the motivational go getter quotes we've read, despite our best efforts, we still have bad days.

So today's motivation is a reminder that bad days are okay. Bad days are a part of life that is not completely avoidable.
This is particularly so at the end of the year.

So if you see a flare up of your depression, anxiety, bipolar, or general burnout, don't be alarmed.

This week, we'll touch on how to take care of your mental health in this season, and how to keep bad days at a minimum.

Sometimes your mind is lying to you.

Your mind is telling you to worry.
Your mind is saying that something is definitively wrong.
The thoughts are coming hard and fast.
You can't put your finger on what it is exactly.. But you just know that something is off.

This could be ANXIETY.
Sometimes there's a trigger to it (eg you've lost a loved one).
Other times it can come completely out of the blue, unprovoked.

Sometimes anxiety can be easily controlled..
Other times, it's like a Pandora's box.. Easy to open, hard to close.

What can you do in this situation?
Some helpful things are
- Breathing (click the link above to watch my video on breathing techniques)
- meditation
- exercise
- speaking/spending time with someone you trust
- medication

What do you do to manage anxiety?
Let me know below. πŸ‘‡πŸΎ

HeyπŸ‘‹πŸΎ
What's your favourite pick-me-up on a Monday? Please share below..

This morning, I'm reminding myself of a simple yet powerful phrase.. "You're Enough".
I'm enough..
Enough to successfully tackle whatever the day and coming week throws at me.

As said before, mindset plays a huge role in mental wellness, and resilience. So today, we are batting away any thoughts of inadequacy or not measuring up.

I headed to the beach for my usual reflections, today on some of the stories I've heard this week.
One of the best parts of my job is seeing the resilience of the human spirit πŸ•ŠοΈ.

Over and over, I am amazed at some of the burdens that some individuals are carrying and defeating.

It is humbling to be part of the process in helping individuals get better able at navigating these streets called life πŸ™πŸΎ .

Happy Friday πŸ€—πŸ’ƒπŸΎ
Also, how beautiful is the sky littered with all these kites!! To be a kitesurfer on a Friday afternoon! πŸ˜…

In times of difficulty, many of us tune into our faith/spirituality/religious beliefs to help us keep going.
Do these have any benefits for our mental health?
Can they be harmful?
What do you think?
This Sunday over at on Instagram, at 7pm, we'll be having a live chat with I Wilson, a theology student and priest in training on the matter of faith and mental health.
Looking forward to seeing you guys there 😁. In the meanwhile, what are your thoughts on this matter?

This advice applies to various aspects..
Relationships, work, endeavours, experiences etc.
As far as is possible, protect your peace.

More of what brings you joy.
Less of what doesn't!

For me, more joy is brought by:
Quality time with good friends/family πŸ‘ͺ
Being in nature πŸŒ²πŸ–οΈ
Taking self care breaks πŸ›€πŸΎ
Feeling purpose in my work/career πŸ‘©πŸΎβ€βš•οΈ
Good food πŸ²πŸ˜‹
