Happy Dietitian's Week to all our fellow DT's!

Here are some facts about us dietitian's:
🥑We don't only focus on weight loss.
🥑We work in a wide variety of spaces: Hospital wards, private practice, public health spaces (like clinics and NGO's), in research & academics, as consultants on product development and food labelling regulation, as consultants to sports teams or in nutrition and health communication (the media).
🥑Our role in critical care involves prescribing the best possible feeding regime for patients to help with a speedy recovery. Deterioration of nutrition status in critically ill patients is associated with longer ICU and hospital stay, poorer functional outcomes, increased risk for infections and higher mortality. So, we play an important role here too
🥑We are regulated to ensure that we follow ethical codes for practice and stay up to date with research and evidence to give you the most scientifically accurate advise.
🥑We take maaany things into consideration when tailoring nutritional advise, such as family history of disease, medical history, eating habits, lifestyle, relationship with food, preferences, biochemistry, medication, clinical symptoms, genetics, etc.
🥑No, we're not the food police and won't judge what you eat. And yes, we do eat chocolate too ;)

A big passion of ours - NUTRIGENOMICS. It means exactly that - nutrition and genes.

Your genes can influence how you respond to certain foods AND the foods you eat can actually have control over your genes (it goes both ways!)

Ever wondered why you struggle to lose weight more than others? Why you get jittery from coffee and others don’t? Why you bloat from gluten? The answer could be partly contributed to your genetic variability that affects nutrient responsiveness.

The good news is, though, that certain foods you eat can actually influence your genes by switching them "on" or "off" or making them work more efficiently. Therefore, making the systems they control work better.

For example, the gene Nrf2 is responsible for detoxifying your cells in your body and eating cruciferous vegetables (bok choy, broccoli, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts and broccoli sprouts, rocket, watercress, spinach, etc) directly UP-REGULATES Nrf2. This means that Nfr2, in turn, can turn up it's protection in our cells and intensifies the detox function in our body.

A simple DNA test could tell you more information on your unique genetic responsiveness to food.

Did you know that your genes (as well as many other factors) determine how effectively you activate vitamin D? So, each of us have individualized vitamin D needs, some of us needing more food/sun exposure or even supplementation than others.

Did you know?
☀️There is a huge variability in how well people activate vitamin D from the sun. It could take anywhere between 5-60 minutes or more of sunlight exposure to meet vitamin D requirements (which of course can cause damage to your skin).
🌍 Skin tones, pollution in the air, clothing, sunscreen, time of day, time of year, where you are in the world, how much of your body is exposed to the sun all play a role in how much vitamin D you will activate.
🐟 Food sources of vitamin D include: fatty fish, eggs, and mushrooms
🍄 The amount of vitamin D in mushrooms varies widely depending on the type of mushroom and amount of sunlight exposure during growth

🩸 So, how can you be certain that you are getting enough vitamin D, with all of this uncertainty? Check your vitamin D stores in your blood - this is the only true way to know you’re getting enough

You want your vitamin D stores in your blood to be around 50ng/dL. If its below this, you can supplement accordingly as advised by your Doctor or Dietitian.

Our food choices are important for health - not only our own health, but also the health of the planet. What we eat matters. Buying local, choosing seasonal and regeneratively farmed foods are small but powerful ways we can make a difference to our health and that of the planet.
Here are some tips that can go a long way:
🌍By fresh, seasonal produce from your local farmers market or urban garden
🌍Start growing your own vegetables!
🌍Add or replace meat in meals with locally grown legumes and pulses (legumes reduce greenhouse gas emissions and provide fiber, plant-based protein, and micronutrients associated with weight management and reduced disease risk!)
🌍Get involved in a community food purchasing network that purchases from local suppliers that use regenerative farming methods.
🌍Plan meals and shop accordingly to minimize food waste
🌍Choose fish that are harvested responsibly by small-scale fishing communities using low-impact fishing methods.
