This week we remember a well-known and respected fridge mechanic who served many communities across Cape Town. Always willing to help, he was known for his hardworking nature, friendly personality, and the pride he took in fixing things others had given up on. Through his work and kindness, he built lasting relationships with so many families. He will be remembered for the difference he made in everyday lives and the legacy he leaves in the communities he served.

We cannot keep speaking about “professionalism” while tolerating operations that have no mortuary, no infrastructure, no real compliance — yet trade under the same title: funeral director.
Grief is not a discount market.

When businesses cut overhead by borrowing facilities, bypassing standards, or avoiding the real cost of regulation, they don’t become “affordable.” They become unsustainable — and they erode public trust in the entire industry.

The uncomfortable truth?

Recent reports of families discovering that their loved ones were buried as paupers without their knowledge are deeply concerning. This is a tragic consequence of using unlicensed or unethical operators who cut costs at the expense of dignity and transparency.
Families have the right to clear documentation, lawful processes, and full accountability. We urge the public to ensure they are dealing with a properly licensed, compliant funeral director who can provide proof of services rendered.
