Trauma affects not only those who suffer through it, it also affects other people who are exposed to the suffering in other ways. We know that this war has not only started in October, therefore its been a prolonged sense of exposure and trauma.
Being witness to terrorist attacks and war can set off a cascade of collective trauma that results in physical, mental, and emotional impairment for thousands; far more extensive and for far longer than we may think. If you’re hurting, overwhelmed, and exhausted, you’re not alone.
I speak for myself when I say this, that it has been emotionally draining to see this graphic images and videos where I can do nothing but try to educate those around me. I spend time engaging in meaningful conversations that both educates me but also leaves me feel helpless due to it being a consistent thing where we have little to no control. I’m here to tell you its okay to have those emotions, we are collectively grieving the catastrophe of Gaza and it will be look different each day. We may experience anger, numbness, betrayal, helplessness and sadness. There is no right way to deal with the genocide that is happening right in-front of our eyes.
I hope this post helps alleviate certain emotions during this difficult time.
