World Physiotherapy Day – 8 September 2025

Earlier this week, we marked World Physiotherapy Day, with the theme of Healthy Ageing — focusing on preventing falls and frailty in older adults.

As an orthopaedic surgeon, I’m reminded daily of how serious falls can be for our elderly population. But I also see how physiotherapy makes a world of difference:

✨ Building strength and balance
✨ Supporting safe, active lifestyles
✨ Helping older adults maintain independence

Healthy ageing is about more than just adding years to life — it’s about adding quality to those years.

A big thank you to all the physiotherapists who continue to help our communities stay strong, mobile, and independent. 💙

GP Meeting at Mediclinic Cape Gate

👩‍⚕️👨‍⚕️ Building Stronger Connections with Our GP Network

I truly enjoyed the opportunity to connect with some of our referring general practitioners at Mediclinic Cape Gate.

It wasn’t just about academic discussions — it was about getting to know each other better and strengthening the partnerships that make such a difference in patient care.

One of the highlights for me was demonstrating the Stryker Mako Smart Robotic System for hip and knee replacements in a theatre simulation. It was exciting to see the curiosity and enthusiasm as some colleagues even tried parts of the procedure themselves — experiencing first-hand what robotic surgery is all about.

I’m deeply grateful for the collaboration and dedication of our GP colleagues. Their role in diagnosing and managing arthritis is absolutely essential, and I look forward to many more moments like this where we can learn, share, and grow together.

First Multi-Disciplinary Team Meeting

🤝✨ Stronger Together in Patient Care

CapeOrtho / Dr Johan Charilaou Incorporated proudly hosted our very first Multi-Disciplinary Team (MDT) meeting!

The evening brought together the entire care team that walks alongside our patients before and after surgery, including:

-Physiotherapists

-Occupational therapists

-Social workers

-Subacute stepdown facility members

-Nurses

-Orthotists

-Management and clinical facilitators

-General practitioners

-Dieticians

Each plays a vital role in supporting patient recovery, and I am honoured to collaborate with such a dedicated group.

During the session, I demonstrated how the Smith & Nephew CORI Robotic System is used in knee replacements. The surgical simulation gave practical insight into the procedure — empowering colleagues to better understand and support the peri-operative journey.

Together, we continue to innovate, share knowledge, and put patients at the heart of everything we do. 💙

Chronic orthopaedic conditions, like arthritis and bursitis, impact the musculoskeletal system, particularly the bones and joints. These conditions can cause pain and limited function, making everyday activities challenging. There are over a hundred types of arthritis, but the most common type that affects older people is osteoarthritis. This condition is known as wear and tear arthritis because it occurs as the cartilage that cushions the end of the bones deteriorates over time.

A straightforward fracture can often be managed with a sling, ice, and rest. However, in some cases, the bone may need to be realigned (reduced) in the emergency room. For more complex fractures, surgery may be necessary to realign the broken bone and secure it with wires, plates, nails, or screws to ensure proper alignment during the healing process.

It's crucial to consult with a specialist to receive the correct treatment and alignment to eliminate any future issues.
