An unforgettable experience with Retina South Africa 🌑👁️

I recently had the privilege of being invited to a truly eye-opening experience — tea served in a completely pitch-black room. Not dim light… but total darkness. You cannot see your hand, the table, or even the person sitting next to you.

Yet somehow the team navigates the room with incredible skill and calm. Even more impressive — they manage to find you and serve tea and a delicious almond croissant! 🥐

During this unique experience I had the honour of meeting Mr Manny Moodley, the CEO of Retina South Africa, who is partially sighted and an active legal adviser. His insight, leadership and passion for helping people with vision loss was deeply inspiring.

Experiencing just a short moment of what complete blindness feels like creates a powerful awareness of how important support, technology and research are for people living with visual impairment.

We also learned about incredible FREE apps that support people with low vision or blindness, helping them live more independently:

• Be My Eyes – connects blind users with sighted volunteers through live video assistance
• Seeing AI – reads text, recognises faces, identifies products and more using AI
• Umsizi Reader – assists with reading printed text and documents
• SuperVision – magnification and visual enhancement tools for low vision users

For optometrists and eye care professionals, it is important to remember that patients with low vision can be referred to Retina South Africa, where they receive valuable guidance, resources, community support and practical tools to improve daily living.

We were also reminded that protecting our vision starts with simple daily habits:

🚭 Stop smoking
🏃 Exercise regularly
😴 Get good quality sleep
🫐 Include antioxidants in your diet

Small lifestyle choices today can help preserve vision for the future.

👁️ The Hidden Superpower of the Eye — and Why It Changes

✨ Did you know?
When you are young, the natural lens inside your eye is incredibly flexible. It changes shape instantly so you can shift focus from far away to very close — like reading a message on your phone. This amazing ability is called accommodation.

In fact, a young eye can adjust focus thousands of times every day without you even noticing.

But over time, something fascinating happens.

The tiny natural lens inside the eye slowly becomes firmer and less flexible. This means it cannot change shape as easily as before. As a result, focusing on close objects becomes more difficult.

This natural change is called presbyopia.

Eventually I had the time to pause and celebrate my incredible WOW Award at one of the places closest to my heart – Spectacle World.

It is here where my passion truly lives: helping patients experience the joy of clear vision and the confidence of feeling unforgettable in their eyewear. Every pair of eyes tells a story, and being able to make a difference in someone’s daily life is the greatest reward of all.

Did you know glaucoma can steal your vision without warning? 👁️

Today is World Glaucoma Day, and it’s the perfect time to talk about this important eye condition in a simple way.

Inside your eye there is a clear fluid that is constantly being produced and drained away. When the drainage system does not work properly, the fluid can build up and cause higher pressure inside the eye.

This pressure can slowly damage the optic nerve, the nerve that carries images from your eye to your brain. Over time this may lead to loss of vision, often starting with the side (peripheral) vision.

The difficult part about glaucoma is that most people feel no pain and notice no early symptoms. That is why regular eye examinations are so important.

At Spectacle World, we can perform a quick and painless eye pressure test. Many people know it as the “puff of air” test.
A small instrument gently sends a tiny puff of air onto the eye and measures how the surface of the eye responds. From this movement, it calculates the pressure inside the eye.

Glaucoma – the “silent thief of sight” 👁️

Many people don’t realise that glaucoma can develop without any symptoms at all until vision is already affected.

Think of your eye like a house with plumbing 🏠💧
Inside the eye there is a clear fluid that is constantly produced and drained away. When the drainage area becomes narrow or blocked, the fluid cannot flow out properly and pressure starts building up inside the eye.

This increased pressure can place strain on the optic nerve — the delicate nerve that carries visual information from the eye to the brain. Over time the pressure can reduce blood supply to the optic nerve, causing gradual damage.

The first vision usually affected is your peripheral (side) vision. Because this happens slowly, many people don’t notice it happening until much later.

⚠️ Some people are at higher risk:
• Family history of glaucoma
• People who are more hyperopic (long-sighted) 👓
• Age over 40

The good news is that glaucoma can be detected early with a simple eye test.
