ARE SOUTH AFRICANS’ RESILIENCE ……. A CURSE/BLESSING?
As South Africans, we have always been known for our resilience, sadly this can be a blessing as much as a curse – a blessing, in that it makes us hard-working and diligent, a curse, as it does not allow us time to deal with maltreatment and trauma from our childhood and adulthood.
The mere habitual nature of being taught from a young age to hide “one’s feelings” and the failure of institutions in allowing a safe space to express feelings without the fear of being ostracized, has developed a nation of ongoing traumatized individuals.
No one can deny this is a growing problem!
Whether due to plain disregarded of humanity or habitual “old fashioned” teachings, we have caused every generation in South Africa from the beginning of time, to be affected to some degree, causing a “cataclysmic earthquake” on how we individually and as a nation, have perceived our worth, which has resulted a compounded effect, in our relationships, financial opportunities, family units and how we identify ourselves in the world as a whole.
Trauma is denoted as “a wounding” of the psyche.
When exposed to trauma, our brain chemical mechanisms remain on “high alert” 24/7 – or what is commonly known as the “fight, flight and freeze response” which manifests in many ways in one’s life – such as anxiety, fear, alcohol & or drug dependency, learning disabilities (ADD/ADHD) and familial family abuse, to mention just a few.
Our brains neuroplasticity (the brain can be said to be “plastic”) needs to be rewired to overcome traumatic situations or experiences. Trauma affects the part of the brain that is responsible for learning, memory integration, emotional memory overloads (especially the fear and fight center), an inability to problem solve and feel present. (Dr. Jean Charcot, neurologist)
A traumatized brain, therefore, finds it more difficult to learn, process problems, and initiate rational logical thinking (to name a few) – which is required in everyday situations (this is visible on MRI scans)
REGRESSIONAL THERAPY aids the brains rewiring of new synaptic neural pathways in the brain, a method where traumatized victims, using embedded cellular body work and the subconscious brain, reverses the “flight, fight, and freeze response to “triggers” such as trust issues, anger, shame, embarrassment etc, which has found to resolve disputes in a work and home environment, allowing family or a work force to become more congenial for all concerned.
The most important aspect for trauma victims is to gain the trust and rapport in a safe space with a qualified therapist. Studies worldwide have now demonstrated that when trauma victims release body and mind trauma simultaneously, recovery time is faster and deeper than conventional mind therapy alone.
Regression Therapy Facilitates:
- Years of emotional release such as trust issues, anger, sadness, grief, guilt etc.
- Allows the brain to become more receptive to learning and focusing.
- Lessens abuse within family units – due to pent up emotions.
- Lessens the need for “numbing down” substances like alcohol, and drugs.
- Enables co-existence of family members, work colleges to be more harmonious.
- Skills implemented & taught in therapy aid in self-empowerment
