๐Ÿ’œ Below is an image which shows the impact of extreme neglect on a childโ€™s brain, compared to a normal childโ€™s brain.

๐Ÿ’œ Trauma and neglect can impact how the brain functions and how well developed it is. This is a child who has experience extreme neglect and I just thought it would be really interesting to show you.

๐Ÿ’œ The way we strengthen the connections in our childrenโ€™s brains is through positive relationships, playful experiences, positive touch, empathy and unconditional love.

๐Ÿ’œ We are made to heal and our minds can heal too.

Our relationship with a child is not defined by what we โ€œteachโ€ a child. It is defined by who we are to a child.
It is defined by presence, connection and space - the type of the space that allows a child to truly blossom

How Addiction Impacts Young Children

Drug and Alcohol Addiction Affects The Family In Many Ways According to Psychology Today, 1 in 5 children grow up in a home where a parent abuses drugs or alcohol. Witnessing the trauma of a parent suffering addiction at a young age has long-term effects on the child. Children growing up seeing a parent abusing drugs or alcohol are more likely to develop substance use disorders in their adulthood. They are also 3 times more likely being neglected, physically, and sexually abused. Seeing a parent on drugs often creates distressing emotions which not only create delays in learning and development, but pronged mental and emotional disorders.

Since children are still developing their personalities and are vulnerable to external influences, they run the risk of repeating such behaviors. Children may be exposed to aggression or violent behavior due to a parent or both parentโ€™s drug use. Arguments between parents may be normal, causing the child emotional distress as they witness family members fighting. A lot of times these addictions cause financial hardships, where a parent or both parents lose their income and even their homes.

Early exposure to a home divided by drug use can cause the child to feel emotionally and physically neglected and unsafe. As a result, they can become more mentally and emotionally unstable. Children may develop extreme guilt and self-blame for a parentโ€™s substance abuse. They may develop feelings of unworthiness for disturbances around the home or develop dysfunctional attachments in their adulthood. In extreme cases, children can be removed from the home and placed in foster care.

Luckily there is help out there.

Welcome to Kidsology

Little bit about me. I am an Afrikaans girl who always loved children & I am lucky that they are drawn to me too. That is why I chose to study Psychology & ended up finding my passion in Play Therapy. Healing little hearts is my mission on earth.

I was crowned Miss Western Cape in 2017 and worked regularly with the underprivileged & the Role Models Foundation. I also traveled to India for 2 months where I experienced the sadness of Orphanages. I have 3 little brothers under the age of 12 & a sister aged 15 which taught me a lot about dealing with children.

I finished my International accredited BPsych Dip at the South African College of Applied Psychology (SACAP) as well as My Certificate in Play Therapy & are studying towards my MA in Practice Based Play Therapy.

For the last year I have counselled at Hope House Counselling Centre dealing with children going through traumas due to divorce, crime, r**e & molestation, bullying, depression, anger issues, anxiety, death of loved ones to name a few.
