🃏 Ever had a tarot reading that hit a little too close to home?
Yeah, these cards have been spilling the tea since the 15th century! Back then, tarot wasn’t some mystical secret though, it was basically the Renaissance version of UNO - played by nobles who probably spent their days sipping wine and debating which hand-painted card had the best gold leaf - complete with dramatic card slams yelling “Pesca Quattro!” in fancy Italian.
A deck has 78 cards, split into the Major Arcana (the big life lessons) and the Minor Arcana (the daily drama). "Arcana" literally means "secrets", which is fitting because tarot has a habit of calling you out when you’re avoiding the truth.
The earliest surviving tarot decks, like the Visconti-Sforza, were hand-painted for rich noble families, so basically, the Louis Vuitton of tarot, because nothing screams “I have money” like a hand-painted deck worth more than your rent!
It wasn’t until the 18th century that people stopped using tarot for party games and started using it for deep, soul-searching questions - thanks to a guy named Antoine Court de Gébelin, who was convinced the cards were linked to ancient Egypt. (Spoiler: they weren’t, but the idea stuck.)
Nowadays, tarot is everywhere, from your local witchy shop to Instagram Reels. It’s like therapy, but with better aesthetics and a side of “why is The Tower card stalking me?”
Whether you see it as a mystical tool or just a really poetic way to shuffle your feelings, one thing’s for sure: Tarot always has something to say!
