DBT STEPS-A

DBT was initially developed by Dr. Marsha Linehan in response to people struggling with chronic suicidality, self-harm and other destructive behaviors. DBT was found to be extremely effective in helping people overcome pervasive emotional dysregulation disorders such as Depression, Anxiety, Bipolar Disorder, Borderline Personality Disorders, substance abuse, eating disorders and even ADHD.

Further studies and research found that DBT could be effectively applied to adolescents. Adolescents are faced with enormous challenges and in response to these challenges DBT STEPS-A (Skills Training for Emotional Problem Solving - Adolescents) an evidence-based treatment program was developed in 2016.

DBT STEPS-A assists teenagers with emotion management, interpersonal, and decision-making skills. Adolescents may face numerous social, developmental, academic pressures, peer rejection, low self-confidence, confusion about self, impulsive behavior, involvement in drugs and alcohol, and issues related to intimacy and sexual relationships. Although educational institutions often do not offer courses on coping with stress and decision making, adolescents’ needs for such skills are continuing to grow.

One of the key features of DBT STEPS-A is that it is designed to be flexible and adaptable, making it an ideal program for use in homeschool settings. The program consists of four modules: Mindfulness, Interpersonal Effectiveness, Emotion Regulation, and Distress Tolerance. Each module includes a series of skills that can be taught and practiced in a variety of different ways, including through individual sessions, group activities, and homework assignments.

Overall, DBT STEPS-A has been shown to be effective in reducing symptoms of anxiety, depression, and other emotional and behavioral challenges in adolescents such as suicidal and self-harming tendencies. It has also been well-received by parents and educators, who have reported that it has helped to improve communication and problem-solving skills in their children.

DBT STEPS-A is a valuable tool for helping adolescents to manage their emotions and behaviors, and can be a great resource for homeschooling families looking to provide their children with the skills they need to succeed.
